A quite magnificent Edwardian tourer; one of two known survivors we believe.
The car was ordered new by one George Clarke Hutchinson who resided on the isle of Eriska near Oban in Scotland; one of a pair the other of which has disappeared into history. It was later sold out of the renowned Sword collection in the early 1960's
The car is equipped with Sunbeams legendary 6. 5 litre six cylinder engine. A row of 12 spark plugs down the top of the engine are energized by a Bosch dual magneto. The engine has been extensively rebuilt with bills for refurbishment of all the major components including main bearings etc. As a result the car starts instantly & runs silently with tremendous power at hand.
The body is the original torpedo tourer supplied by Sunbeam when the car was new. Finished in a fetching green & black with red coach lines. the paint is in super condition. To the interior is buttoned mellowed red leather which over the years has acquired just the right level of patina. A high quality beige hood is fitted with leather retaining straps looping onto front wing brackets.
When new the car was specified with Warland detatchable wheels; an optional extra at the time. Two spare mounted tyres sit on the drivers side running board. The car is festooned with brass fittings seemingly wherever one looks. The lights are CAV units OEM branded for Sunbeam. A period Auster screen folds out to provide a semblance of protection fro rear mounted passengers. A modern alternator is fitted for reliability. but the original comes with the car.
One has to see this car to appreciate its enormous size as if dwarfs most of its contemporaries. The body is long & low with a very rakish appearance. The front cockpit sides curve outwards in a beautifully Rubenesque manner. Both front & rear accommodations are spacious in the extreme. Driving the car is akin to driving a Silver Ghost for whom the car was a direct competitor. The engine is smooth & silent whist offering ample reserves of power to pull up hill sin top gear with ease. The gear box is easily mastered & the whole driving experience a true pleasure. The car is as a whole in impeccable condition & needs nothing other then driving.
Given its utter rarity. opportunities such as this occur once a decade or so.
