Starting life with a James Young Allweather Tourer. the chassis was later re-bodied as a shooting brake. probably in the early post-war years. and was with one owner in this guise from 1961 until 2011. 50 years with one owner! In 2012. the body was replaced with an original Gurney Nutting open tourer. which was originally on chassis 955 (later NR505). and therefore only 40 chassis away and of virtually the same date as the car itself. The car is in delightful condition. correct. with inbuilt cosmetic maturity giving an undisturbed feel to the way the car both looks and drives. Mechanically nice. drives well with sprightly performance. and ready to use and enjoy this summer. being nicely matured cosmetically in a very appealing way. making driving a pleasure. rather than a worry! Original engine. number 926. and gearbox upgraded to 'B' type in the cars early days. Offered serviced and newly MoT tested. Complete with hood. tonneau cover (zipped at the front) and hood bag. all in excellent condition. fold-away 'Auster screen. twin side-mounted spare wheels. lovely P100 'bullseye' headlamps. and bags of character!

Chassis No. 915. Reg No. XY 4944. £235. 00.

Snippets: An Early Motorist

James Harold Clay (1885/1962) took delivery of 915 at The Manor House in Thornton in Craven. Yorkshire the year of his 40th birthday. The Clay family fortune can be traced back to 1863 when James Clay (grandfather of J. H. Clay) & his brother-in-law John Horsfall founded the firm of Clay & Horsfall. James Clay had earlier been in partnership with Solomon Priestley in the firm of Clay & Priestley which was dissolved in 1863 when both parties went their separate ways. James Harold Clay later became involved in the mining & chemical industry with firms such as Charnell Soap & Oil Co. Bradford Waterworks & Potts Ghyll Mine. James H. Clay's father-in-law was the cotton magnate Sir Amos Nelson – they shared a love of motorcars as in 1923 Sir Amos had purchased a Silver Ghost Chassis 56HG. In 1903 James Harold Clay was granted a licence to drive a Motor Car as was his brother Bernard. The two brothers were keen sportsmen - Bernard chose golf and Yachts (Bernard once won 1st prize at the Southport Regatta in Lalla Rookh – named after a daughter of Aurangzeb. a 17th century Mughal emperor) and James concentrated on motor racing – both in England and France.
