What a lovely original MG TC in marvellous ‘oily rag' condition. It's extremely solid. on the road and in fine mechanical fettle having been subject to substantial recent expenditure.

Made in January 1949. this TC. like most. was exported to the USA. The TC. although only available in right-hand drive. was the car that in the immediate post-war years cemented America's love for British sports cars.

From what we can gather. this particular example was lucky enough to spend the majority of its life in the kind climate of California. which goes a long way to explain its solidity and originality today. From the records we have the MG was in the Ashenfelter family for several decades – we have registration cards going back to 1977. which continue through to 2001 indicating that the car was always kept on the road during that period. In 2013 the MG returned to the UK and has remained in the hands of a single keeper who undertook a programme of sympathetic refurbishment while keeping the beautifully patinated body and interior exactly as it was.

The engine received all new ignition components and rebuilt carburettors. The suspension was rebuilt with new links. bushes and kingpins. The hood has been replaced with a new double duck cover and the side screens are all new. There's a new stainless steel exhaust system. a new SU fuel pump. a new spare wheel and five new 450-19 Dunlop tyres.

The body and frame appear totally original and corrosion free. The paint is very old and has a lovely patina. Similarly. the interior retains its original leather. which looks and feels fabulous. All instruments work correctly. There are some wonderfully period indicators fitted to the tail. along with a modern. yet discreet. brake light for safety on today's roads.

On the road the MG drives exactly as it should with a sweet. willing engine and slick. quiet gearbox. It's remarkably free of any rattles or untoward noises. Navigating Britain's county lanes on a sunny day could not be more of a joy.

Somehow a largely original car with a sense of age about it has infinitely more character and charm than a ‘box fresh' restored car. it feels like the genuine article – something that has been preserved and withstood the passage of time rather than a modern facsimile of a period piece. It's a lovely thing that needs to stay exactly the way it is.
