An original-bodied four light Landaulette. re-painted in recent years. nicely re-upholstered in red leather throughout. and both the fixed and folding part of the roof has been re-covered in suitable mohair. Mechanically in good order. running nicely. and benefiting from a recently overhauled gearbox. Other work in the past few years is well documented and includes overhauled dynamo. and a very nicely re-nickel plated set of correct Lucas lamps. An attractive car. with correct 20" wheels. rear-mounted trunk. all in decent order. and offered at a sensible price.

Delivered to Samuel Wilkinson Pilling (1856/1939) JP of Welton Hall. Yorkshire. who was 72 years young when he took delivery of GYL 62! S. W. Pilling was a director of Beyer. Peacock & Co Ltd –

manufacturers & exporters of locomotives – their articulated locomotives were mainly exported to South & East Africa and Australia with their standard locomotives being used in Sweden. Norway. Buenos Aires. Malta. Isle of Man & Wales! Samuel Pilling was a noted organist & he regularly gave recitals on his Four Manual Concert Organ at Welton Hall.

His wife. Leila. was a daughter of Marmaduke Fox. a popular & wealthy woollen merchant at Marmaduke's funeral (Feb 1892) the local press reported that at least 1. 00 people attended the funeral.

Samuel & Leila's son Richard Norman Pilling lived at Kiplin Lodge. Howdendyke which had been inherited by his wife Maud. she was a member of the Anderton family whose fortune was made in the Chemical industry.

A book titled “The Annihilation of a place called Howdendyke” was published by J D Porteous which details the Anderton family & their involvement with the community.

By 1964 GYL 62 was in Transvaal (across the Vaal). Pretoria with A J Messenger and in 1965 he & GYL 62 took part in the 1 st Shell Rhodesia National Vintage Motor Rally.

It is believed that Mr Messenger caught site of GYL 62 whilst he was “geographically misplaced” touring Wales. he stopped at a farmhouse to ask directions. saw GYL 62 & immediately purchased her!
