The Porsche 550 Spyder was one of Porsche's first dedicated
racing cars (since the 356 was first and foremost a street
car). the 550 Spyder removed all doubt about what the small new
German sports car company was all about. The success of the 550 in
competition included a win at the 1956 Targa Florio which proved
that the new company. which was just five years old when the 550
first appeared. was serious about motorsport. If that wasn't
enough. it was catapulted to stardom when James Dean died
at the wheel of his own 550 Spyder in September 1955. Consequently. br/>the 550 is often replicated. and as is often the case. the quality
varies widely from manufacturer to manufacturer.
We are delighted to offer one of the Porsche 550's produced by
the highly respected Chuck Beck. The Beck recreations are
considered the finest within the industry and capture the essence
of the original 550 and combining it with robust modern
mechanicals. It is a light and agile mid-engine
racing car that can be best described as a four wheeled motorcycle
with a no frills exciting ride.
Built for a wealthy Japanese
client. it has only covered 9. 00 miles since it was completed in
1995. It is fitted with a standard VW (Brazilian) 1. 10 cc
engine which certainly gives the car enough power to excite. This
550 was imported from Japan in 2014 and. importantly. it
is correctly UK registered as a Beck 550 Spyder.
This exceptional recreation is finished in the colours of the
James Dean car. in fact the current meticulous owner was not happy
with the interior scheme when he acquired the car
and. although the leather was perfect. the colour was not so a
re-trim in red now accurately replicates the Dean car. With the
originals currently fetching into the millions. this 550
represents exceptional value. especially given the estimate.
