TRULY AMAZING. 1962 MERCEDES UNIMOG 404 WITH LESS THEN 250 MILES AND IN INCREDIBLE CONDITION. THE ULTIMATE OFF-ROAD MACHINE. STREET LEGAL. READY TO BE ENJOYED!!
WHY BUY A 1962 MERCEDES UNIMOG??? WELL. WHY THE HECK NOT!!!!!!
IF YOU KNOW WHAT THESE WERE BUILT FOR AND WHAT THEY ARE CAPABLE OF YOU WILL WANT TO EXPERIENCE IT!!!
WHY BUY THIS PARTICULAR ONE???  IT VERY WELL MAY BE THE LOWEST MILE/KILOMETER EXAMPLE IN THE U. S AND PERHAPS IN THE BEST CONDITION.
IF YOU HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT ADDING A MERCEDES UNIMOG TO YOUR COLLECTION. HAVE A PLACE TO DO SOME EXTREME OFF-ROADING. OR JUST WANT TO BE THE HIT OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD THEN THIS IS THE ONE YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!
We recently acquired this awesome 1962 Mercedes Unimog in a trade with a customer of ours locally here in the Atlanta. GA area. He had done a trade 2 years ago on a Hot Rod he had and took the Unimog up to his lake property where he enjoyed it immensely. He actually trailered it to a few off-road events and in to the mountains for some fun with his buddies where it always attracted a crowd. The history of this particular Unimog is that it was originally purchased by the Swiss Military back in the 60's. It never saw any real action and spent most of its life in a Swiss Military Warehouse and was eventually imported by a collector in Arizona in 1998.  It sat in his collection until 2 years ago when the previous owner got it in a trade. He has several off-road vehicles and did his homework before making the deal.  When he received it he had the motor professionally tuned and the ignition upgraded.  Everything on the truck works perfectly and it is full of nostalgia and originality.  He did decide to have it repainted about a year ago in a slightly darker green then original simply because of the age of the paint. This Unimog is not missing anything and does not need anything!!! With just 344 Kilometers which is under 250 miles this Unimog may be the lowest mileage example still around. I am far from an expert on these so I will do my best to provide enough large images. a video of it starting up and running and an honest description to help you decide if this is the one you have been searching for.  As most of you probably know this is truly an extraordinary machine and like no other off-road vehicle.  Do a search on youtube and you will get an idea of just what these are capable of. Fun. fun . fun!!!!!
My partner and I have driven this Unimog and actually drove it home on Halloween.  We first put on some pretty scary masks and slowly drove through the neighborhood and kids and adults stared and appeared quite fearful.  We then loaded up our kids and their friends and had a blast. While we did drive it at about 45mph part of the way home it is definitely not a highway friendly vehicle.  After all. lets face it this baby was built to go over. up and down. and through all types of terrain without getting stuck. speed is not in it's vocabulary.
Here is a short summary I found online that will give you a little history/info on the Unimog:
Universal Motorized ImplementUniversal-Motor-Gerät (UNIMOG)

The Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG is a four-wheel-drive. all-terrain vehicle with high ground clearance and a power take-off (PTO) at the front and rear. They are highly adaptable and can be customized to support any type of auxiliary equipment. The UNIMOG was developed after WWII as a specialized agricultural vehicle. Not quite tractor and not quite truck. it would be an aid to farmers who needed something that could plough the fields and bring their produce to market. In 1945. prototypes were built at a factory in southern Germany. In 1948. a 25 hp Daimler-Benz OM 636 diesel engine was added. In 1951. production moved to Gaggenau. In 1953. the UNIMOG was being developed and built by Daimler-Benz. Today. new UNIMOG models are still being built at the Gaggenau factory and are in public. private and government (military) service all over the world.

Between 1953-1962. there were three distinct UNIMOG body styles. which can be defined loosely as.

Angular. with Soft Top (1951-1963)Streamlined. with Enclosed Cab (1953-1956)Military Specification. with more Power (1956-1980This particular Unimog is style 3.
UNIMOG Body Style 3
Military Specification. with more Power (1956-1980)

The third Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG body style of the 1953-1962 period was the Type U404. It was introduced in 1956. and production ran until 1980. Also known as the UNIMOG-S. it used a 24 volt electric system and had a 2. 2 liter (134 cubic inch) 82 hp. 6-cylinder gasoline engine (that was also used in the Mercedes-Benz Type 220S Ponton sedan). Fuel consumption on the UNIMOG-S models ranged from 18. 5 liters/100 km (12. 7 miles/gallon US = 15. 3 miles/gallon Imperial) to 60 liters/100 km (3. 92 miles/gallon US = 4. 7 miles/gallon Imperial).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you will see in the pics below the body on this Unimog is in exceptional condition! Since it sat in warehouses most of its life it never accumulated any rust like so many of these have. The previous owner decided the paint was in need of a refresh so he had it professionally painted. The color is a bit darker then original but it still looks great and is definitely one you could take to shows or impress your friends and collectors with.  All of the original equipment and compartments seem to be in tact and as you will see in the pictures later in the listing the compartments house many original components and accessories. The doors are removable and there are side windows for the front that are removable and are currently stored in their original space behind the cab. The Canvas top over the cab is removable and was replaced fairly recently as the stitching was starting to come apart due to age. While this 1962 Unimog shows some very minor signs of use and age it is overall in fantastic condition. Here is a walk around photo tour of the body:

Designed to carry troops and equipment. this Unimog does have a complete canopy structure and canvas cover for the bed area that is also in fantastic condition. We put it on for some pictures and it is currently disassembled and neatly stored in the back. The original canvas cover is in great shape overall with just some very minor separation in some of the stitching. The wood in the bed is original and is in great condition further exemplifying the low miles and the fact that it was stored indoors most of its life with very low usage.  Take a look:

Climb inside this Military Off Road beast and you will find pretty much would you expect.  Extremely original and everything still in fantastic condition and everything working as it should.  The drivers side door houses an original manual and other original books and documents.  The passengers side door has a metal stick attached to it which is actually your Fuel dip stick. how funny is that! No fuel gauge. if you want to check fuel level you place the metal dipstick in to check your fuel levels. Front seats are in great condition and pretty comfortable for what they are. The drivers side seat has a  Race Quip 4 point Harness that was installed for added safety during off-road usage and rock climbing.  All of the gauges. turn signals. map lights and other gadgets appear to be working correctly.   Turn the key. push the start button and this baby fires right up!! Take a look inside:

Pull the hood release on the dash and check out what is under the hood of this awesome Unimog.  The original 2. 2L 134 cubic inch.  Inline 6 cylinder gasoline powered engine looks just like it did in 1962. These were built to run through water so everything is nicely sealed. With what is believed to be under 250 original miles on it this motor is fresh and strong. It was professionally tuned and the ignition was upgraded by the previous owner. New boots. seals and fluids.  Transmission is a 6-speed with 2 crawler gears ( forward and reverse). shift on the fly 4 wheel drive and differential lock. As the previous owner told us. although it has not been tested over any real distance. he would not hesitate to drive it across the Trans America trail.  He had considered changing from the 24v to 12V but everything was working so well he decided to leave it original. A Battery Genius 2 bank charger is permanently hooked up and stored in one of the side storage boxes. so all you have to do is plug it in if you are leaving it in storage for extended periods of time to preserve the battery.  Again. I am far from an expert on these so any technical info needed is probably available on a google search. The underside is extremely clean and solid as well. At the end of the listing I included a video so you can hear it start up and running.

Included is some cool original documentation and log book with very little filled out. There are also quite a few accessories and original items in the various storage compartments. The passengers seat fold forward and there is a storage bin under it which has a tool bag. and a variety of original items like a waterproof container with a spark plug in it. brand new can of electrical tape. and the original tire pressure gauge. Inside the storage bins there is a variety of cool items as well as chains. tow cable etc. There is an original shovel and pick mounted under the wood bed. I believe you will find this Unimog is quite complete and quite fascinating. It is sure to be a wise investment as well that you can take out and have quite a bit of fun in.
