1971 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL MARK III COUPE IN REMARKABLE CONDITION. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF AUTOMOBILE AMERICANA.

The legendary design of this Mark III was the genius of Lee Iaccoca. His decision to slap a faux Rolls Royce grille on the front of this car in 1968 really did start a revolution. From Curbside Classic. "What defines a true luxury car? Not comfort and convenience. as was proved so convincingly by the Broughamization of mundane Chevys. Fords and Plymouths. A genuine luxury item is recognized as such because it has sufficient exclusivity. style. quality and prestige to set its owner apart from the masses. What's more. it must have presence--the ability to at once command attention and instantly make others aware of the fact that this is something truly out of the ordinary. This Lincoln Continental was the last American luxury car that did just that. ".

Whenever writing an ad for a collectible automobile I am challenged by the old adage to under-promise. and over deliver. This Lincoln will make that task much easier for me to do.  The balancing act of describing the car and all it's shortcomings accurately. while not discouraging a potential owner is always the tight rope a dealer will have to walk with collectible automobiles here on eBay. This car has some blemishes. defects. and minor cosmetic issues that will need to be addressed should the winning bidder want to make this Mark III show room quality.   ( I will discuss those issues in further detail later in this description. and please look at the photos). However. these issues do not diminish the fact that this car is RARE. and finding an example of any ORIGINAL 43 year old car in this good of condition at any price would be difficult. Let alone one as collectible. and desirable as this Lincoln is.  We researched and compared equivalent listings across the country. The prices range from $3. 00 up to $48. 00.   Based on the ads I looked at. the condition of this Mark is definitely in the top ten percent of any I saw listed out there.  The real bonus of this Mark III is the previous owner kept an impeccable log of service and maintenance performed on the car ever since he purchased it in February of 2000. This car has impeccable service and maintenance records that were maintained by the previous owner. It has the original owners manual and several original marketing items from Lincoln for the 1971 Continental Mark III.   To the serious collector this car has the intangibles you seek.

A quick list of items replaced or added to this vehicle by that owner as of 102. 00 miles is as follows:

REPAINTED IN 2002. NEW TIRES AT 109. 00 MILES. U JOINTS. REAR SPRINGS. ROTORS. BRAKE SHOES. WHEEL CYLINDERS. FLEX HOSES. MASTER CYLINDER. NEW HOLLEY CARBURETOR. ALTERNATOR. POWER STEERING PUMP. OIL PUMP. TIMING CHAIN AND GEARS. FRONT STRUT BUSHINGS. FUEL PUMP. GEAR REDUCTION STARTER. PETRONIX IGNITION SYSTEM. C/D PLAYER (ORIGINAL STEREO WILL COME WITH CAR). STEERING GEAR BOX. EXHAUST PIPES. AND MUFFLERS. TRANSMISSION VACUUM MODULE. TRANSMISSION EXTENSION SEAL. DRIVE SHAFT BALANCED. ADDED TRANSMISSION COOLER. HEADLIGHT DOOR MOTORS REBUILT. NEW FRONT SPRINGS. VOLTAGE REGULATOR. WINDOWS TINTED. CLEANED AND SEALED GAS TANK. FAN CLUTCH. SWAY BAR BUSHINGS AND LINKS. NEW A/C COMPRESSOR. MECHANICAL GAUGES (OIL & WATER TEMP). This is an impressive list of some of the most costly and difficult parts to repair on the car that have already been restored or replaced. This was his everyday driver and he took care of it.  We are so happy to be able to offer such a cared for vehicle.

It is very rare indeed to find these historical pieces of  American steel that evoke feelings of an era so strongly associated with (and I quote Curbside Classic again)

. "the ability to at once command attention and instantly make others aware of the fact that this is something truly out of the ordinary".

The mechanical and electrical systems of this Mark are all in fine working order. Good brakes. steering. electrical. air conditioning and heating. The interior is in great shape for this aged vehicle. The seats are firm. the leather has no excessive cracking or stress marks. and there are no rips or tears. The green shag carpeting is plush and intact.  The car starts right up and runs like the big block luxury cars of that era should run.

The original advertisement for this coupe read like this. "The Lincoln Continental Coupe with it's sweeping roofline and the far wider doors give the Coupe a pleasing. rakish look. But like the sedan. it's massive 460 cubic-inch deep-breathing V-8 delivers most satisfying surges of reserve power. Twin hide-away headlamps. cornering lights and parking lamps are recessed in the bumper. Tinted glass all around reduces sun glare and improves the efficiency of the Automatic Temperature Control. Luxurious Twin Comfort Lounge Seats have soft glove leather seating surfaces in this Mark III extra-cost interior option. Each is individually power adjustable two ways. Each has it's own super-soft armrest. The Continental Mark III is the single most distinctive car in America. In performance. ride. appointments. and flair. it is everything a luxury car promised to be. And more. Since the day we introduced Mark III. the luxury car class hasn't been the same. People want this car because it is something better. And today. this car stands alone. First in luxury. prestige and value. ".

More from Lincoln. "Mark III's instrument cluster is framed with rich. genuine walnut veneer. Sports-style needle gauges give you the accurate readings of fuel supply. oil pressure. alternator operation and engine temperature. The console for total Automatic Temperature Control (it's standard equipment!) is easy to reach. And the famous Mark III timepiece is in the driver's line of sight. Designed by Cartier. exclusively for Mark III. this is the first electronic chronometer in an American motor car. Transistor-actuated gears give you twice the accuracy of ordinary car clocks. The Sure-Track electronic braking system is standard equipment on Mark III. This computer-controlled system improves braking stability by helping prevent sustained rear-wheel lock-up on ice. snow. or wet pavements. If the driver brakes hard in an emergency stop. Sure-Track's electronic monitors take over. automatically actuating and releasing the brakes. (at the rate of 4-cycles per second) until the car slows to 4 mph. or until the brake pedal is released by the driver. "

DISCLOSURES: There are several minor cosmetic blemishes around the car. They are as follows:

*slight pitting in the chrome on the top of the driver's side view mirror and the mirror glass itself in the side view mirror has some blackening.

*slight blemishes /fading in the clear coat at the top of the drivers door.

*at the quarter window of the back seat on the drivers side you will find approximately a 1" x 2-1/2" area that has been repaired with a surface filler and painted with a green that does not match. (see photo). Though not a professional repair still it's appearance does not detract significantly from the overall presentation or look of the car.

*at both corners of the back windshield you will find some splitting in the vinyl of the top right where it comes out of the chrome trim ring that goes around the back windshield. There also was some small amounts of silicone sealant applied around those areas it seems to prevent further delamination of the top. (see photo)

*on the roof towards the rear above the back seat on the drivers side of the car is a slight fading/discoloration in the green of the vinyl top. (see photo)

*there are two small places on the quarter panel of the passenger side that have finger tip sized areas of bubbling/surface rust. one area has broken through the paint (again about the size in total area of my index finger tip) and the other area is still covered with paint but. visibly blemished. (see photo)

*there is an area of clear coat on the trunk deck lid that is fading/blemished. approximately palm sized. (see photo)

*along the length of the top of the passenger fender there are several very small areas of bubbling in the paint that have not broken through or cracked the paint surface. (see photo)

*at the hood and nose there are a few pinhead to match-top sized chips that have been touched up.

*both of the front turn signal lamp assembly's have "spider" cracking in the clear marker lens portion of the cornering lamps.

*the dash board has a 6-8 inch length of slight lifting/separation between the two separate panels that combine to make the dashboard.

*Star chip in windshield the size of a tip of a ball point pen.

Should you address every item listed you would still have a fraction of the cost invested versus what you would have to spend on just another car in half as good as condition as this one. Enter into the antique collectible automobile market at a high level on the cheap with this one. This car will win shows if you want it to. Or. it will take you where you want to go if you want to drive it everyday. Either way you are a winner.
