The Mercedes-Benz R 129 models were produced from 1989 until 2001
and were sold under the SL-Class model name before being replaced
by the R 230 in 2001. The R 129 was based on the shortened floorpan of
the Mercedes-Benz W 124 saloon and featured many innovative details
for the time. The fifth generation of the legendary SL series of
two door convertible sports cars featured a fully retractable
hardtop that was marketed as the Vario Roof a first for the SL
class. although it had been available on the smaller SLK model
since 1997.
This pre-production SL is possibly the most important W 129 500 SL
outside of the Daimler Museum. Stuttgart. Manufactured in 1989. br/>this example was one of two 500 SL's produced as prototypes in 1989
and made available for the Lyon Press Launch of the W 129 model. The
press day came to an exciting end when two motoring journalists
were driving the 500 SL's with the convertible roofs down. By
complete accident. one journalist misjudged the road. causing the
car to flip over and crash. Luckily for the journalist. the brand
new latest technology roll bar sprang up in the required
'nano-second'. allowing the journalist to survive his ordeal. The
wrecked car was transported back to Mercedes-Benz and its
whereabouts are since unknown. The other car was used for the Paris
Motor Show and afterwards was shipped over to the UK where it was
used for marketing purposes. Mercedes-Benz disposed of the car in
1990. The subsequent owner has maintained the car in close to
concourse condition and it has completed less than 60. 00 miles
from new with full service history. Finished in its original
blue/black paint with contrasting mushroom leather. it comes
complete with a reassuringly large amount of paperwork.
Interested parties should note the 'UOE 99' registration
is not included with the car and that the image shown is an
