1911 Panhard et Levassor
Chassis number: 8 F-16859
Registration: Applied for
A rare & unusual car that has just emerged from long term storage in a Spanish Museum. We are unsure as to exactly which model this is. but think it to be of about 18 hp rating & 2. 5 litres or so. Over the last month it has had a thorough service & recommissioning by Vintage specialist William Allan at Classic Restoration services in Chichester. This included several fluid changes of coolant & oil. a full lubrication service. de-glazing of the brakes. oiling of the clutch. re-cutting the valves etc etc etc.
As a result the car is running beautifully. After ticking up the gravity fed Zenith carb. the car starts without fail on the second turn of the handle. Once hot. the slightest nudge on the handle will set it in motion.
Bodywork is of solid oak panels clad with wicker basket weave. The coachwork is really beautiful & clearly very very old. but in super order & of a excellent & high quality.
On the road the car is easy to drive running at 35-40 MPH with a noticeably smooth engine. It has four forward speeds with reverse being located behind first. There is no ignition switch so the magneto is always live & stopping the engine is done with an earth cut out button. Due to the long layup we are running it at about 5 degrees advanced for a couple of hundred miles but will advance it a little more & so increase the power after the bedding in miles are covered.
On the dash board are 1972 & 1973 plaques for the Barcelona to Sitges run & we suspect it was shortly after this that the car was purchased & put into the long term private museum. During its sojourn there it was kept serviced & in occasional running order.
The exterior of the car is festooned in brass with lovely Phares Besnard lamps. Assorted horns & various other fittings. It sits on wooden artillery wheels which are in perfect order with completely tight wheel spokes. The pale coloured hood is serviceable & in good condition. The real pleasure of this car however is driving it. It is very very useable & trots along the road with alacrity.
