Looking for an awesome off-road RV but don't want to shell out the $60K or more for a production vehicle? Then I have the vehicle for you!!

My wife and I decided we wanted an off-road rig so we could go camping on our terms in the places we wanted. so we started looking around. We soon discovered the vehicles on the market that suited our wants and needs far exceeded our budget with USED models going for around $150K and up. So we decided to build one for ourselves.

We chose one of the most rugged platforms we could think of. We weren't looking for glitz or gadgets. we were looking for capability. ruggedness and dependability in any terrain. Our search led us to the M35A2 6x6 military platform which was already a legend by any vehicle standard.

After exhaustive searching across the entire nation we located one that was in good condition. It is a 1967 M35 with an LDS 427-2 multi-fuel motor that had been thoroughly gone through by a military depot in 2004. It wasn't ultra-sleek and new like the ones we had first looked at. but we are not the ultra-sleek type. We tend to choose "go" over "show" and this rig was perfect. It purred like a kitten and provided the kind of basic. dependable and over-built platform we were looking for.

So we purchased it and designed for ourselves one of the coolest off-road camping. hunting or get out of dodge vehicles anywhere!! It is capable of going damn near any where and over or thru almost anything and. best of all. it is completely 'off the grid' because of our design and it's multi-fuel engine!!

Imagine driving this rig to your favorite out of the way hunting or camping spot. or even across the country and. if need be. pulling in to a local service station and asking the attendant for some used motor oil or transmission fluid to fill up your tank!! The truth is. you can run almost any flammable fuel or mix of fuel through this rig and it will run like a champ. About the only think it doesn't like is gasoline or aviation fuel. (We have personally never run anything but regular diesel fuel through this rig. but there are many who own them who have and it is reassuring to drive a vehicle with such flexibility!!)

We built this rig like a house with 2x4 studs and insulation so its way tougher than a traditional RV. It is a true all terrain. all weather rig. We bought snow chains which are still in the box because we've never needed them.

The interior dimensions are 7'4" side to side. 7'5" high and 11'9" front to back. The top and bottom sleeping areas have full size beds so we comfortably sleep four adults and two dogs.

The cab over stores all our hunting. fishing. cold weather gear and any other extra supplies we may want and can actually sleep additional people if need be.

Its not a luxury coach by any means. but its a work horse and a lot of fun. In this rig you can stay in a RV park or campground for a weekend. But you can also spend a month (or more) in a remote area where you see animals and nature. not people.

We built it with an actual wood stove for heat and cooking. We have camped in blizzards in the mountains of Colorado where we had 14 inches of snow in one night and a sleet storm in Utah and we were toasty warm. We also heat our water for bathing and washing up with the stove.

The kitchen has a large pantry and plenty of cabinets for storing food and kitchen supplies. We also built the kitchen area to hold a small freezer. This is great for hunting and fishing trips or extended camping. My wife fills the bottom of the freezer with one gallon water jugs then plugs in the freezer overnight which freezes the water and the freezer is then a big cooler. On the tailgate there is also a space where we mounted our 6500 watt diesel generator (not included in sale) that ran the freezer and any other electrical devices we chose to take with us. You can also hook up to the power in a RV park.

We designed a 'bathroom' out of pvc pipes and two shower curtains for remote camping if we need it. Otherwise we hang the outdoor shower on the side of the rig and bath with nature.

We hook a camo tarp off the side and stake it into the ground so we have plenty of outdoor space that is out of the sun or rain where we set up our chairs and fire pit. This is also a great place to talk to everyone who comes over to check out your rig! You will NEVER meet a stranger driving this rig around.

It comes with heavy duty tire iron. extra wheel studs. extra belts and filters. on-board compressed air supply. US Army trouble shooting. use and repair manuals and sits on 10 Goodyear G177 radial tires that are all 90% or better and a spare as well.

This is an extremely inexpensive RV to operate and maintain. It is currently registered in CA as a historic vehicle and costs under $90 per year for tags. There is no smog requirement. Any parts. filters. etc. are easy to locate and inexpensive.

It has a 10 speed manual transmission and a range of 350 miles on a tank of fuel (50 gal) which makes it a sipper in comparison to some RVs. It cruises quite well at about 62 mph on the highway.
