Ever since that VW Bus sold for nearly $220. 00 at auction just a few years ago. the bus market has been growing strong.   The fuel that is feeding the frenzy for this collectible is the lack of good original cars.   The restoration costs can be staggering so many collectors are looking for prime “survivors. ”  Unfortunately. this has really pushed a lot of enthusiasts into the cold.   There are many buyers out there that just want a good solid and honest bus to enjoy and not have to take a 2nd mortgage out on their home to do so.  

 

As the 23 and 21 window examples continue to skyrocket in value. enthusiasts are looking for the next tier collectible.   The Deluxe model with 13-windows is it.

 

This particular example is really the perfect car for someone who wants a good future collectible that they can enjoy today.   They don’t need to start a restoration project.   They simply need to put some fuel in the tank. turn the key. and enjoy the countless thumbs-ups and waves from other motorists.   This bus was delivered new in California.   It still has its correct and original black California license plates (both).   The current owner lives in San Diego and purchased it about 16-years ago.   He is an active member of the local Type 2 VW Bus community and found this VW from a fellow member.   Within the first couple years of owning it. he had it repainted.   The original color was white with Sea Blue on the bottom.   He repainted the white the same color but changed the blue to a correct VW color called Bahama Blue.   He did leave the original paint in the engine bay intentionally.   When the car was repainted. they found the body to be in excellent shape with no major signs of accident damage and minimal rust.   In fact (see pictures). the original floors and chassis were found to be in very good original condition.   There was a small amount of rust on the front passenger floor.   It was sanded and treated with Por15.   Also. the floor just behind the front seats is showing some small amounts of rust by the door latch and a few other small spots.   The current owner has been watching both areas for the last 16-years and they haven’t gotten worse.

 

The current owner is meticulous about his care for this bus.   No service was over-looked and as a result. he said it has been incredibly reliable and has never run better.   Some recent repairs include:

 

Full major service/tune-up including valve adjustment and oil service

New fuel filter

Complete brake inspection and rebuild including master cylinder. wheel cylinders. and shoes

New fuel tank

Rebuilt transmission by ISP West

New clutch

New generator. pulley. belt. and coil

New interior panel kit from Wolfsburg West

 

Although this bus drives great and shifts smooth. it does have normal leaks.   Upon recent inspection. the mechanic estimated about $850 to reseal the motor and fix the oil leaks.

 

I would classify the condition of this VW as a “survivor-driver. ”  It looks great and presents well at any event.   The paint has some nicks from use but it just ads to the patina.   All the exterior lights work properly and the tires appear to have well over half-life remaining.   The interior is very tidy.   The rear bench seat has a stain and the headliner has some tears.   The gauges appear to work properly even the original clock.

 

This bus drives superb.   It is surprisingly smooth and has decent power.   The shifting is perfect with no grinding.  

 

This is really a wonderful example that is ready to enjoy today.

 

California registration is paid through September 2014.
