1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible

 

History

 

The Pontiac GTO is an American automobile built by Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1964 to 1974. It was a muscle car classic of the 1960s and 1970s.

 

In early 1963. General Motors' management issued a ban on involvement in auto racing. At the time. Pontiac's advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance. and racing was an important component of that strategy. With GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing. Pontiac's young and visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance. The GTO was basically a violation of GM policy. but since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment. it fell into a loophole in the policy.

 

Pontiac's intermediate line was restyled again for 1966. gaining more curvaceous styling with kicked-up rear fender lines for a "Coke-bottle" look. and a slightly "tunneled" backlight. The tail light featured a rare louvered cover. only seen on the GTO. The GTO became a separate model series. rather than an optional performance package. with unique grille and tail lights. available as a pillared sports coupe. a hardtop. or a convertible

This yellow GTO convertible was purchased from the original owner. Richard Rodenburg. As a teenager. Richard shelled the engine and replaced it with a 400ci block. When Richard started a family. the goat was stored in his dad's garage until the most recent owner purchased it in September of 2005. Because of the long storage. the car was rust free. but needed a complete restoration. Since its purchase the engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt. all the seals replaced. The pipes. mufflers. brake lines and gas lines have all been replaced.
