Rare factory RHD, matching numbers, hardtop, £8000 just spent.

History of this car

The Alfa Romeo historical archive states our spider was an early production example made in September 1968 and sold new the following month to Alfa Romeo SA, Johannesburg, South Africa, finished in classic Bianco Farina AR008 paint with a black skai interior, the same combination it wears today.

The 1750 Spider Veloce model was never exported to the South African market in CKD form, unlike other Giulia 105 series models, so this is a proper factory built car.

In South Africa our car lived inland in the arid Transvaal province for many years and was imported into the UK in 1990, since when it has had 4 keepers, one, a lady, from 2006 to 2014. There is an excellent history file with the car dating from the time of importation.

We acquired the Spider in 2014 and sold this lovely Alfa to the current owner in the same year when it had a recorded 28,500 miles.  Today the car is showing 38,000 miles (TMU) and we are assisting the owner in the sale of his Alfa, a sale only prompted by his expanding family.

The owner has invested a considerable sum in the pre-sale preparation of this car, and of the 30 or so round tail 1750 RHD spiders on UK roads, this is one of the better ones.

Body

This makes for a very good first impression, with an even finish and deep shine in the original Bianco Farina colour, and the correct “snout” feature still intact, often lost on these cars.

The car benefited from cavity rust proofing upon importation into the UK, and has had body repairs over the years as detailed in the car's history.  As part of the pre-sale preparation, new wing bottoms have been fitted all round, and a new windscreen and seal have been installed, plus a fresh pair of Carello headlight covers.

The remainder of the glass is excellent, and the side windows are etched with the old RSA registration number.  The brightwork is intact and presents with some age related marks.

The hood was replaced in 2014 and today is unfaded with a clear rear Perspex screen; an original type hood cover is also fitted.

Our car is also supplied with a desirable and very rare factory hard top, painted in contrasting black. Of note this hard top is of a more appealing design than the usual type seen on these cars.

Mechanics

A large quantity of invoices accompany the car, evidencing over £25,000 of mechanical expenditure with the engine, carburettors, gearbox, back axle, prop shaft, brakes, suspension and instrumentation having all been overhauled.

The matching numbers engine is fitted with Dellorto carburettors and is an excellent starter hot or cold and displays factory oil pressure. The gears select easily and the current owner has covered some 10,000 miles in it over his 6 years ownership.

As part of the pre-sale preparation, we have serviced the car with fresh fluids and filters, overhauled the hand brake and performed a cooling system overhaul with all new hoses, plus the fitment of 4 new Michelin XAS tyres and tubes. The engine bay is nicely detailed and a pleasure to look at.

The MOT expires on 13.08.2022

Interior

This is in generally good condition with recovered seats, unmarked rubber protective matting over original carpets. The rear apron carpets have been redone by Coburn's. The dash top is uncracked. The door cards are excellent and pride of place goes to the correct Hellebore wood rim steering wheel.

Boot

Very clean with correct rubber matting, spare wheel and original Battaini jack in place; no rust in any of the usual areas.

Summary

The values of this model is on the up with restored examples making over £70,000, so this car represents great value at the price suggested. Our spider is supplied with the aforementioned large history folder and owner's and workshop manuals.
