Very early examples are very hard to find today. and the generations of improvements and extra horsepower prove the mid to late 1960's examples the most desired. especially in multi-passenger form.
For the first time in many years. the St. Louis Car Museum is able to offer a wonderfully kept and restored Volkswagen Microbus! We are delighted to showcase this beautiful 1964 VW Type 2 Deluxe 13-window example! It comes to us finished in Mint Green & White two-tone with deluxe exterior trim. chrome bumpers with over riders. 15” chrome wheels. front Wipac fog lamps. and a wood-slatted roof rack! Inside. the seats are nicely matched using Medium Green vinyl upholstery accented with Turquoise piping throughout! Three rows of full bench seating offers plenty of passenger space!
It remains a wonderfully solid vehicle. and presented with a restoration completed within the last several years to our best estimation. It recently hails from a large. beautiful collection located in Texas with original floors and outstanding chassis! All original VW side window glass still remains. as well as the original. factory-installed 1500cc engine offering 51 horsepower with Solex 28 PICT-1 carburetion. Source the chassis number (1274938) with the engine number (0495742). both support this as a numbers correct Microbus built in March of 1964. Additional features include 4-speed transmission. rear barn door entry. radial tires measuring 165/80R15. Kenwood audio system with two forward speakers. heater/defrost. full instrumentation with dash clock. rubber floor mat. and front seatbelts featuring the Wolfsburg crest on the buckle.
With such a fresh and complete restoration. it starts and runs beautifully! The clutch engages perfectly with tight transmission gear selection! The new Kuhmo radial tires. rebuilt suspension. and all new shocks help ride the road wonderfully! A simple vehicle by design. it quickly becomes the view of the road and ease of drivability that becomes most impressive!
