Brief History: 1932 Packard 4-door. 5-passenger. 4-window club sedan. Ninth Series. Model 902/Standard Eight. Style #506. Chassis/Engine Serial number: "343583". Body style/mfgr. 's unit number: "506398". It was assembled in Detroit during August of 1931 then shipped to the Packard distributor in Newark. NJ. The current owner acquired this sedan in March of 1997 from Tom and Noreen Ferry of Rocky River. OH. Tom Ferry and his brothers were owners of the well-known Cleveland manufacturer Ferry Cap & Screw Company. They acquired the car in the mid-fifties from an owner on Long Island. NY where the car had been sitting in barn-type storage for some time. According to a family relative of Tom Ferry who is familiar with the car's past half century. this luxury sedan was reportedly (but without documentary verification). originally owned in the New York area by the family of prominent Hollywood screen stars from the '20's and '30's. John. Lionel & Ethel Barrymore. The car was in fair/poor condition when Tom Ferry acquired it and spent over a half dozen years in storage before he and his brothers were able to restore it back to running condition. The engine was fully rebuilt and the interior re-upholstered along with exterior cosmetic upgrades. The Ferry family drove the Packard to area meets. shows and for personal family tours and events thru-out the sixties and seventies. The current owner then invested another $23. 00 in extensive fresh cosmetic. trim and equipment restoration after acquiring the vehicle in 1997. The vehicle had around 48k miles on the functional odometer at that time. Now as of October. 2012 said instrument had chronicled 48. 07 miles. The previous mentioned Ferry family contact affirmed that the odometer mileage was infact original.
Packard's Ninth Series Standard Eights (models 901 and 902) came aboard in June of 1931. They were essentially the same as the predecessor ('30-'31) Eight Series with respect to body configurations. and mechanicals. They bore chassis/engine Serial #'s between 340051 and 347720. For 1932. Packard also introduced an upgraded new Light 8 and premium luxury V12 series. In all. factory records confirm. just 3. 37 901/902 Standard Eights were built. spread across the spectrum of 12 body styles. It is reliably estimated that less than 500 club sedans were produced. How many of those are still around??
Body & Paint: This club sedan exhibits excellent sheet metal integrity. panel fit and alignment and a high quality re-paint in 1997 by Magic Custom & Restyling. This body-on restoration entailed a complete prepping. primer and refinishing with multiple coats of burgundy maroon and black acrylic lacquer paint. The two-tone paint is still in very good condition with only a few very minor chips and/or scratches. Fender weltings were replaced as also all weatherstriping seals. The roof of this closed model utilizes a "soft". black-finished. rubberized fabric insert over the wood slat and mesh sub-structure. As with all Packards till the mid '30's. the body is of composite construction - a tub frame-work of kiln-dried hardwood for the sills. cross-bars. door pillars. cowl bars and roof rails. The exterior body panels are of 19-gauge steel. The frontal section is dominated by Packard's classic. upright radiator shell and yoke styling. This club sedan extends 192-in. overall length. is 77" wide and stands a stately 71 inches tall. and provides an 8. 4-inch ground clearance.
Chrome & Trim: Extensive quality rechroming included. but not limited to. hood trim and handles. front rear bumper assemblies. grille and emblem backing. headlamp and tail lamp assemblies. windshield frame. dual grille horns. outside door handles. rear luggage rack and hinges. Some of the chrome finishes on a few of these items are starting to show their age. (Small dull and thin chrome areas on some items. Very minor. You have to be looking for them. ) Dual side-mounts rest in welled front fenders with black and chromed metal covers. Rear-view mirrors are fitted atop said covers. A pair of modern. albeit small. circular directional signal fixtures are mounted just above the bumpers. amber lens at the front. red lens at the rear. The original touring trunk mounted on the rear luggage rack had a leather re-covering.
Interior: The cabin of this luxury class club sedan was re-upholstered and trimmed some 35+ years ago by the previous Ferry family owner. A premium quality wool broadcloth has been fitted and well maintained over the years with no noted tears or soiling. The bench seats have leather bead piping binding the edges and intersections of the cushions and backs. The headliner material is a cotton moleskin fabric. The mauve loop nylon carpeting was replaced in 1998. The only issue we saw with the interior was the fabric around the driver's door frame. (See Photo #51) Also in that photo. you can see that the window sill fascia is missing a few of its mounting screws. The instrument board is nicely detailed with original. varnished and polished walnut burl fascia and moldings. The analog gauges are arrayed in circular. white on black faces mounted on an engine-turned panel. They include oil pressure gauge. motor thermometer. ammeter. fuel-supply gauge. speedometer and 8-day (functional) Jaeger clock. The ignition switch. integral with the coil. is mounted right of the center panel and fitted with lock & key. Also on the center control panel is the choke cable and the cigar lighter. A reading lamp and ash-tray is mounted in the center of the cowl rail. The 18 1/2-in. diameter rubber steering wheel over a steel frame has 3-spokes and horn button. At the left side under the dash is a driver-controlled hydraulic shock absorber adjustment knob. The rear compartment has two in-laid smoking sets in the rear quarters. Also aboard are carpeted. adjustable foot hassocks and loop-type rear pillar grips. Interior door hardware has been rechromed. Dual glove boxes flank the instrument panel. On the front floor the pedals have been re-padded. The tall. angled shift lever for the manual 4-speed gearbox is mounted adjacent to the center transmission tunnel.
Glass: All of the glass windows are in great condition without any cracks. chips. or delaminating problems. Not sure if they are still original to the vehicle. The side windows roll up and down with no issues. The windshield flips out for added air flow.
Wheels & Tires: This 902 Series Packard retains it's factory stock. full steel disc 19-inch wheels which are finished in body color burgundy maroon with chrome trim rings and black center hubs with red hexagon caps which have been a Packard trademark since 1904. A low-mileage set of Martin 6. 50/7. 00 x 19 tube-type. wide white wall tires are mounted. The spares are carried as dual side-mounted units with painted/chrome trimmed stainless steel covers.
Chassis - Frame & Undercarriage: The entire underside was cleaned. detailed and repainted in 1997 and the single muffler/pipe exhaust system replaced. The fuel tank was removed. cleaned and sealed. The chassis of this 902 Sedan is a steel. ladder-type with central X-member. This club sedan reposes on a 136 1/2-in. wheelbase. tracks 63. 0" up front and 64. 0" inches at the rear. The machine curb weighs in at a hefty 4555 pounds.
Nine times out of ten. people selling a car would not talk about or take any photos of the underside. The undercarriage tells you a lot about the car. that is why we took a few pictures of the bottom.
Mechanical: This Packard is fitted with it's original in-line. L-head. iron-block 8 cylinder engine bearing serial # 343583. This unit is fitted with an iron head and aluminum alloy crankcase. with solid valve lifters. 6. 0:1 compression ratio and is rated at 110 BHP. Said straight eight was reported fully rebuilt by the Ferry family in the late '50's. It has been maintained in good running condition since. In the 1997 restoration project all hoses. clamps and major fittings were replaced. as also the plugs. wiring. ignition components. fuel pump and fuel lines. The side-draft Detroit Lubricator carburetor was overhauled. The engine compartment was cleaned. detailed and painted. Engine displaces 319. 2 cubic inches. has a nine-bearing crankshaft and 6-volt electrics. Fuel capacity is 20 gallons.
Transmission . lutch and Rear Differential:
Engine is coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission with the two top gears synchronized. Drive is via a single. dry-plate clutch with mechanical foot pedal actuation back to a hypoid. "angleset" rear differential with a 4. 41: 1 final ratio and semi-floating drive axles.
Brakes:
The Bendix 4-wheel mechanical brake system of the internal-expanding type consists of 16-in. cast-iron drums with the hand brake lever on the floor to the driver's left and operating on the rear wheels.
Suspension/Steering:
The steering gear is a worm and sector-type providing a 4. 0-turn lock. Suspension is conventional with front I-beam axle and semi-elliptic. longitudinal . metal-covered leaf springs. The rear set-up uses a solid axle with the same leaf spring configuration. A unique feature for this mid-priced luxury sedan is it's driver-adjustable hydraulic lever shock control at both the front and rear. providing either soft or firm ride characteristics. Another standard feature. typical for premium automobiles of the era was the automatic Bijur chassis lubrication system which carried a vacuum-operated pressure pump with integral reservoir providing automatic lube to 40 chassis points.
Summary: Keep in mind that this isn't a 100 point museum or concours type vehicle. It is an extremely nice restored vehicle that shows very well. Is it prefect? No. With some minor cleaning and detailing of the undercarriage and engine compartment. this vehicle can easily be taken to the next level. It was recently serviced a few weeks ago after being in storage for a short time and is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
Taking into account those aforementioned details relating to previous ownership history. possible Barrymore estate celebre legacy. rarity. utility. garaging logistics. low mileage. quality of the cosmetic and top-side mechanical restoration. this Packard would be a true gem in anyone's fine automobile collection.
