1929 Rolls-Royce 20hp Dual-Cowl, Boat-tail Tourer by F.W. Griffin for sale
Current customer rating:
For sale by auction on Saturday 31 August 2013 with Historics at Brooklands. Brooklands Motor Racing Circuit. Weybridge. Surrey. Call 01753 639170
Code-named 'Goshawk'. several experimental chassis had shown
most promising results when strenuous tests of the first 'baby'
Rolls-Royce had been executed. The Rolls-Royce 20 hp is easily
recognisable by its horizontally arranged radiator shutters (only
the last series sported vertical shutters). With a shorter
wheelbase and a more economical engine it proved an ideal addition
to Rolls-Royce's range as a second model alongside the Silver
Ghost. Its lighter weight and a reduced turning circle gave the
20 hp fine handling.
This 20 hp. late model (vertical radiator shutters) was first
registered on the 17 th July. 1929 and still retains the original
London registration number. UV 20. Originally supplied with a Weyman
Fabric Saloon by coachbuilders. Freestone & Webb. it was
subsequently thought to have been re-bodied during the war as an
ambulance and delivered to the West Riding Ambulance Authority.
GEN 74 was then converted again to a much more sporting Boat tail
body by F. W. Griffin. Finished in Ivory with a contrasting red
leather Roi-de-Belge style interior. this most recent incarnation
has been executed with care and the quality of build is very good.
The boattail decking has utilised high quality wood with a pale
inlay with the varnished finish showing no signs of age. The
rear-most section opens with a T-key and provides storage for two
large soft bags or similar. Streamliner running boards connect well
with the (thought to be) original front wings and the overall
profile is considered sporting. The radiator has been recently
re-cored and an electric fuel pump has been installed. Boasting its
correct starting handle. it is supplied with some original history. br/>a UK registration certificate and a full 12 month Mo T test
certificate.
This interesting tourer combines good value with
a classic dynamic design.
