The MACHO Brit

1973 Triumph TR6

E verybody loves a convertible. Driving at dusk up the coast with the wind in your hair and that special someone by your side. there's nothing quite like it. Sure. there are lots of new drop-tops on the market. but what's the fun in that? It's better to own a car that's collectible. vintage. and something not everyone can obtain easily. Trouble is. much of the rolling art pieces we cherish have already approached stratospheric levels in price - MGAs. Austin-Healeys. Porsche 356s. etc. For instance. a ‘67 Jaguar XKE convertible could go from $50K - $100K nowadays. and people are happy to pay that amount. just to own such a car.

Among those classics cut from the same cloth as the ones mentioned. and are now being sought after by enthusiasts. are Triumph TR6s. Collectors recognize the cars' appeal and charismatic charm. These roadsters share the same characteristics of their early British brethren: top-down fun. wood dashboards. and full gauge instrumentation. In addition. like Jags and Austin-Healeys. these TRs have a nice. big. in-line six to wisk you along.

Nowadays. over 40 years after their introduction. good TR6s are getting rare. You just don't see 'em on the road anymore. A car of this caliber can only appreciate in value as the years go on.

This TR6 is in excellent condition. I've owned it for awhile. and it's definitely one of the nicest British cars I've had in my garage. I purchased it from the family whose father had restored the Triumph. but unfortunately had passed on before he was able to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Many of the car's components have either been replaced or restored. The list includes. but is not limited to:

** New Paint

** New Interior

** New Top and Tonneau Cover

** Rebuilt Engine

Here's a genuine California. six-digit. blue license plate TR6. It is currently registered and insured. This Triumph has a unique charisma that many find appealing. It turns heads. and surely you'll be grinning all over.

Unfortunately. over the decades many TR6s have fallen prey to neglect. rust. accidents. or unknowing owners who drove them into the ground. Not this example though; it's a survivor. After 40 years. this classic still rides proudly in the essential Triumph tradition: it's sporty and thoroughly British.

Triumph's cockpit is textbook sportscar issue. You have your wood dash. large. chrome SMITHS gauges. and a manual gearbox. The dash pad top has a small crack in the center. and the cardboard glovebox insert is missing. Sun visors are not installed. but are included in the sale.

.
This TR's interior is very clean and inviting. It even smells good. The look is almost more Italian than British! Everything here is new: the unique and appealing tan seats have been reupholstered. All the carpeting is new and of good quality. This includes the kick panels. rear storage area behind the seats. new mats. and below the doors. All panels. too. have been replaced with new units - doors. behind the seats. top of door panels (black part with grip). etc. Everything looks fabulous. The door beading and rubbers are also new. out of the box.

.
Electrical system is in good order. with no issues to report. Lights and signals work fine; so do the wipers. There is no radio and the air horns are not hooked up. Gauges all function properly. and always show favorable readings. I might add. The heater and blower work great and definitely make things more comfortable when driving on those cold nights through the mountain passes.

I always thought these looked sooo cooool. Tonneaus are practical when driving in the wet. yet also allow you to play "the outlaw. "

.
Both Tonneau Cover and Soft Top. with traditional three window design. are brand new. Window "glass" is clear and supple. not sun-baked or cracked. The top folds easily and the rear window can be unzipped when the top is up. creating a sporty driving experience. On the passenger side. there are a couple small. pin-holes near the front latch. but nothing major.

.

Frame was recently painted and looks new . Chrome hardware is clean and the inside fabric. crisp.

.

The exterior is in excellent condition and is beautiful! The paint is recent and was a quality job. I believe the factory color was a dark blue. but the subtle beige finish looks wonderful and is quite appealing. The sides are very straight and the finish has a lustrous. "flat" reflection. meaning no orange peel. The engine bay. trunk. and door jambs. were also painted and are in the same clean condition as the exterior. Stock road wheels were powder-coated. and the center caps painted to match the body. The rear bumper has a small ding in the center. below the license plate.

Take a look. the sides are very straight. There are no dents. rust. or corrosion on the panels. Undercarriage is solid as well. This includes the floors. frame rails and wheel well areas.

Trunk is plain and simple. containing spare w/ matching rim on full-size tyre - which is new. by the way. Inside is clean. and there's a little carpeted mat. too. so you won't feel bad throwing an overnight bag in the back.

.

Mechanically. the TR6 is in great running condition. The engine is strong. smooth. and quiet; also. there's no smoke. This will be demonstrated in a short YouTube video below. In the time I've owned this TR6. the car has been incredibly reliable. even being my daily driver for a time. When it's stone cold. you pull out the choke lever a bit. turn the key. and that wonderful TR motor comes to life. emitting one of the finest exhaust notes from a six cylinder you've ever heard.

.

The Motor has been rebuilt recently. Dual Weber carburetors have replaced the Stromberg units. Oil Pressure is always favorable and high. Engine temperature consistently stays cool - below the half line. even after a long journey. The transmission and clutch are in fine operating condition as well. Gears operate as they should. Clutch is good; no chattering. Brakes stop fine and the pedal is firm. In fact. a new Master Cylinder and Brake Power Booster or Servo were just installed.

This car is very fun to drive; no doubt about it. Shifting is easy and precise. with no excuses. That wonderful TR6 exhaust note you'll hear as you go through the gears will instantly get you hooked.

Even after driving awhile. the gauges show very favorable readings and the vitals are where they should be.

The beauty of a timeless design.

The fine performance from that straight "six".

The cache of a vintage British motorcar.

All these tickle the senses and add to the pride of TR6 ownership.

Driving a British roadster makes you feel like a kid in a candy store. excited and full of energy. The experience is pure fun - both for driver and passenger. This car instantly transfers you to another era. when things were simple and taking an afternoon drive was a pleasure you looked forward to.
