"According to tradition. your supposed to get a key of the door when you reach 21. Well. that's ok. but its hardly exciting stuff. is it?I mean. whats the big deal about being given a smack chunk of metal that lets you into a house? At that age. you've surely got better things to think about.
Like getting a key to a car. Now that's a bit more like it and by all accounts. Steve W giguere along those lines so he made wife Mrs. W21st birthday just a bit special. He bought her a 12/50 Herald. The Triumph had covered approx. 90. 00 miles and he handed over £180. Back in 1978. that was a fair amount. but it was money well spent because Mrs. W used it as her daily driver for six years and put another 40. 00 miles on the clock.
Every year. the car required a bit more patching up to get through the MOT test. but still soldiered on and never broke down. Well. it is a Triumph. after all. Anyhow. the Herald eventually followed the route so many destined-to-be- classics do- it was taken of the road and put into storage. A total of 12 years and solitary confinement in a damp lock up garage took their toll and it became obvious that the car would require a great deal of attention to bring it back to roadworthy condition. And for that. read time and money. But the family just didn't have the heart to get rid of it for sentimental reasons. and I can go along with those feelings.
Finally Steve W formed a plan - send it to a specialist for a total rebuild and keep it a secret from Mrs. W. And. thus. it was delivered in a most sorry state to reflections. restoration guys extraordinaire in West Sussex.
Well. that was in November. 1997 and the Herald hasn't that long been finished. so you're getting an idea of how comprehensive the rebuild was. In a word. total. "
