Daimler's in house coachbuilder Barkers built only 500 of these beautiful. hand built drop head coupes. They were based upon the rugged and popular DB18 chassis and when new cost a staggering £2560. 7s. 10d. - The price of a good detached house. plus change. The survival rate is surprisingly high. a testament to the quality of these now very sought after thoroughbred cars. Many have been restored and few projects now come to light.
This is a rare opportunity to buy one of these exclusive. handsome. coachbuilt drop head coupes. To help the restoration along. it comes with a a second car. a DB 18 Daimler Consort with a restored chassis.
The Special Sports is complete. all parts removed have been carefully stored. many of them cleaned down for refitting. The Daimler had been poorly stored and suffered corrosion mainly to the front end - which is made in steel. I have stripped the entire body back to bare metal revealing numerous dents and splits in the aluminium. all of which will need repair. The body frame is in good order. I have concentrated on the front (steel) of the car and have acquired a very good replacement bonnet and driver's side wing. the passenger side wing has had extensive repairs made to it. The dashboard and interiorwood work has been removed. some of it re-veneered. almost all of it newly lacquered. All instruments/switches are present and most have been tested.
The engine is seized. but all correct ancillaries are present including the twin carbs/manifold and dynamo (with rev counter take off). The interior is all present. including the rear sideway facing seat and door cards. but all are in need of upholstering. The hood frame is in place and has the remains of a hood. I have owned this car for several years and have been collecting parts and gently progressing the restoration over this time. A huge leap forward was made when I purchased the Consort as a failed restoration project. this car has had its chassis reconditioned. with too many new parts to list. but briefly includes new wiring loom. engine and gearbox mountings and a petrol tank that looks as new. Many other parts have been reconditioned. the chassis is in excellent order and this car is easily pushed and steered (giving the impression that attention has also been paid to steering etc). The restoration stalled several years ago on the Consort and although I believe the engine had previously been reconditioned. it has seized (may be just ‘nipped' on the rings). no guarantee of this can be given however.
The Consort is largely complete and although I consider it a donor car is in remarkably good condition. with no corrosion in the body. one brand new front wing and the other in good order. it too is complete with the exception of a drivers door and probably a few other bits and pieces. it could certainly be restored if that appealed to a new owner.
I recently came to the conclusion that I am not going to be driving this Special Sports for some time and made the decision to buy an up and running car. which I have recently taken delivery of. Lack of storage space (these are not small cars) and the realization that this project will now become even less of a priority. has brought me to the decision to sell the 2 cars together as an ongoing project.
The photograph of the red and cream Special Sports is not the one for sale. but is reproduced to give you an idea of what this car will look like once restored.
