1963 Triumph TR4

First step in the TR's transition from rugged. uncomplicated sports car to something altogether more refined. the TR4 was introduced in 1961. Giovanni Michelotti's new bodyshell brought the styling bang up to date while beneath the skin there were numerous chassis changes. Rack-and-pinion steering. widened front and rear track. and an all-synchromesh gearbox contributed to improved drive-ability. while wind-up windows were a big advance on the TR3's primitive side screens. The standard engine was the 2. 38cc four-cylinder overhead-valve unit first offered on the TR3A. and when equipped with the optional overdrive the TR4 was good for a top speed of almost 110mph. Today. the four-cylinder TRs are among the easiest of post-war classic sports cars to own and maintain. being supported by a multitude of component suppliers and other specialists.

The car offered here is a rare find. One family owned from new. this absolutely rust-free car passed from grandfather to grandson and has been used sparingly since. Showing an astonishing and original and documented 49. 51 miles from new. the car is a fantastically preserved piece of automotive history. The car comes with a substantial file of original documents. including the original sales receipt from Larry Reed Sports Cars in Los Angeles for a base price of $2899 plus options (heater and whitewalls). sales tax. etc. dated July 20th. 1963. The car then remained in the greater Los Angeles area for 50 years! Still retaining the original black over yellow California license plates issued to the car in 1963 proves it has never left the area.

The car still shows exceptionally well considering it is the original London Black paint it left the factory with. Original paint vehicles are through the roof! As they say. anyone can restore a car. but they are only original once. Still with great lustre and shine. it is testament to how the car has been kept. in a dry climate. garaged and used sparingly. The car retains all original body panels. and panel fit is excellent as can be seen in the photos. The original wheels have been painted in the original grey colour and have excellent hubcaps and good tires. Brightwork and glass are excellent throughout.

The interior of the car is excellent and perfectly original with the exception of recovered seats in leather in 1996. Carpet is very good as are panels and dash. The soft top is excellent. and the car comes with a full tonneau cover.

From the dating on the accompanying receipts and service records. it is evident that the car was stored for much of the late 1970s until the 1990s.

The car was fully re-commissioned in 2007 and then barely used. The car has just gone through another re-commissioning to ready it for sale. The car drives FANTASTICALLY well. The engine feels taut and responsive with great power delivery. The transmission shifts smoothly through a good clutch. The engine and transmission are original to the car and have never been apart or out of the car. Brakes . suspension and steering are excellent. tight and responsive. All electrical systems work perfectly.

This car really has to be seen to be believed. Inspections are wholeheartedly encouraged. I would certainly drive anywhere without thinking twice. It feels tight and bright and exudes the care that it has been given.
