VW Camper Van T2 1968

Up for a very reluctant sale is our lovely 1968 early bay . we've owned it for around 15 months and in that time have spent a considerable amount of money to bring it up to a very high standard. We are considrering selling for one reason only. and that is that our family is about to get a bit bigger and we really need to get a Westfalia elevating roof model to accommodate all the kids happily.   We prefer the tin top and whilst we can manage with the awning we are going to bow to practicality and look for a full elevating roof Westie. . so. our investment in this van will be somebody else's gain!

A bit about the van.

Produced in January 1968 this is one of earliest rhd bay's in the uk with one year only parts including painted dash. long rear view mirror and push button handles.

The van was completely restored by the previous owner with all the necessary panels replaced (Small feature in VW Camper & Bus Magazine during restoration which I can send you)

It has a recent new mexican 1600cc engine (approx 6 years old) with 8800 miles on the clock.

Twin Webber ICT Carbs

BRM alloys with very new tyres.

All glass and seals replaced. opening front quarter lights and opening rear safari window with jail bars.

Sainless steel exhaust. front disc brake conversion. ildly lowered on adjusters. reconditioned steering box. full service in April 2013.

Internally:

Bespoke solid oak interior with SMEV gas oven. ob. ink with electric water pump. ridge (240v). DigitalTV/DVD mounted from the roof. Full width rock n roll bed. black out style curtains. heated front seats. 4 seat belts (suitable for child car seats). original childs hammock over front seats. original westfalia folding table. loor tiles by Madmatz.

Mechanical/Bodywork:

The underside of the van was wire brushed . ed oxide treated and stone chipped in September 2012 (receipt available).

The van has always been garaged and there is no welding required. It sailed through the MOT (valid until March 2014) with no advisories.

The main thing to consider with this van is that it has had the benefit of a Type2Detectives “Health Check” which means it has been thoroughly inspected by the experts at T2D and a list of repairs/maintenance issues produced.

As we weren't thinking of selling the van at the time we authorised T2D to carry out all the work on their list of findings which involved engine removal/checking and repair of all items which ought to be done whilst the engine is out. We have the receipt for this work which was in excess of £2000 (See www. t2d. co. uk for details of the guys that did the work if you don't already know of them).

The van has never let us down. never been on an AA truck and because of the money we've spent bringing it up to such a high standard mechanically. we are confident to take it anywhere.

Mechanical work undertaken by Type2Detectives March 2013:

All fuel hoses replaced. Engine removed and flywheel oil seal replaced. Brake feed pipes repaired. Beam & Idler greased. New ball joints fitted. Brake hoses replaced. Shock mounts repaired. Spring plate bolts repaired. load spreaders fitted. new input shaft seal fitted. new gear oil. Fuel breather pipes replaced. Number plate light fitted. Rear brakes overhauled. Rear drums overhauled inluding machine work. O/S rear wheel bearing replaced. Handbrake mechanism overhauled in drum.

We have a box full of receipts to show all the stuff that's been done including the above and lots more. Basically it's ready to drive away and go camping!

Obviously there are cheaper vans around but we have brought this one up to a certain level which means there are no hidden nasties and the buyer can have piece of mind that there wont be a huge bill lurking around the corner.
