and safety. setting benchmarks within the luxury saloon and
limousine segments whilst also bringing new levels of technological
innovation and product refinement to the industry as a whole. The
W126 in its quest to deliver maximum comfort and outstanding safety
pioneered driver and passenger airbags. acceleration skid control
and a bodyshell with forked longitudinal member. making it the
first series production vehicle in the world to meet offset crash
requirements. The W126 was also the first production car to use
safety belt pre-tensioners and to fit rear passenger seatbelts.
This top of the range V8 500SEL was completed at the factory on
8th September 1982. registered in Dusseldorf on 13th September and
personally imported straight away by the business partner of the
successful industrialist and Lords Peer Harry Stokes. DVLA issued
VYJ 988Y documentation to the car just 14 days later. The car was
gifted to Lord Stokes shortly afterwards and re-registered in his
name. It was for driving to his Villa on the French Riviera
from his home in Guildford. Surrey. Consequently the car was
specified in righthand drive with a km/h speedometer and optioned
with both air-conditioning/climate control and an electronic steel
sunroof. Coachwork is metallic Lapis Blue with Galaxy Blue ribbed
velour interior. Further luxury appointments include heated front
seats with electronic positional adjustment. front armrest. br/>adjustable rear seat backrests. electric left door mirror. Becker
Mexico cassette stereo. automatic antenna. light alloy wheels. br/>headlamp washer/wiper. ABS. Tempomat cruise control and limited
slip differential.
Mr Stokes passed away aged 94 having owned the car for
approaching 30 years. The family offered the car to the son of
their neighbour. who as a motoring industry professional had always
known and admired it. Although garaged. it has seen little
use over two years of ownership so the decision was made to sell.
The limousine is in remarkable time-warp condition throughout. The
performance and handling of the car today is comparable to when the
car was new with effortless power and seamless. whisper-quiet
delivery even when hurried. The gauges show healthy oil pressure
and the steering and suspension continue to give the car excellent
balance and a purposeful yet composed driving experience. Documents
in the history file refer to upkeep at Mercedes-Benz Guildford. The
car has two keys. owners' handbooks. service book. Becker
user-guide plus cards and pamphlets issued by the factory when new
- all in perfect condition. The original fabric tool-wrap is
present and correct. The car has done just 97 miles since its MoT
test (no advisories) and 900 miles since its last full service
including new discs and pads in April 2013.
