1928 Rolls Royce 20 hp Doctors Coupe by Carlton.
Chassis number GFN 67
Registration number: GU 2288
Off test in December of 1928. A very pleasingly proportioned 20 hp Doctors Coupe bodied as a second body in the late 1930's by Carlton to update replace the original slightly staid saloon body. At the same time a 20/25 engine was fitted whilst retaining the original 20 hp gear box. In modern times a laycock overdrive has been fitted making this the fastest 20 hp I have ever driven. It runs effortlessly at 60 mph.
The car has been under the ownership of a talented engineer for over a decade. In his tenure a modern alternator has been fitted allowing for prolonged night time motoring without risk of flattening the battery. The Carlton Carriage Co bodywork is very very pretty & pleasing to the eye with extremly elegant lines. Versatile it boasts a dickey seat to the rear for occasional riders. The top of the luggage box lifts off & bolts back on a reciprocal 180 degrees plane in order to provide clearance for the dickey seat back.
The paintwork is lightly patinated Maroon over black. To the inteior is lightly used pale blue/grey leather. The hood is also grey & is very very easy to erect whilst stowing neatly under a hood bag when furled. Twin spare Shell brand fuel cans are mounted to the running board. On the other side is a useful tool box. The battery box is located in the dickey seat footwell making for east access. The front seats are adjustable allowing for persons of both tall & short staure to be eminently comfortable.
This is a 20 hp needing nothing & in super running condition. The engine is very quiet & runs cool even at speed. The overdrive engages seamlessly. The oil pressure is excellent. The car as a whole is a credit to its last keeper. It has a delightful light patina of use to it giving it an authentic & useable feel as opposed to a concours garage queen.
