Snippets – Code Named “Simpsons” Ordered by Major Leslie Sidney Marler OBE TD (1900/1981). after WWII the Major joined the family firm of property speculators. During the 1940s the family lived at Wavendon Towers (built in the 1890s & earlier occupants included Rev. H. Burney son-in-law to Peter Richard Hoare a member of the banking family) near the village of Simpson. Buckinghamshire and not far from Bletchley Park. In 1940 the Major was approached by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) as they wanted to use Wavendon Tower as a recording studio for their propaganda transmissions. as the Major was serving in the army & his family had moved to Scotland they happily agreed and Wavendon Towers was given the codename of “Simpsons” from the local village! The Marler family property business can be traced back to the 1890s with Sidney Marler (Leslie's grandfather) when it was known as the Belgravia Estate Ltd; today the family are still involved in the property market & their extensive portfolio now includes hotels with interests in - The Capital Hotel & The Knightsbridge Green Hotel in London and more recently The St Enodoc Hotel. Cornwall. Later owners of PRH4665 include the undertakers E Turnbull & Son Ltd of North Shields which dates back to the 1790s. in 1907 the Turnbulls had the first motorcar in North Shields – a Vauxhall and by 1949 had a large fleet of cars including Rolls-Royce limousines.
