1976 Porsche 912E - The Phoenix Has Arisen!!!! Orange Exterior / Black Interior VIN: 9126001091 2 Doors. Rear Wheel Drive. Coupe. 4 Cylinders. Manual Inventory ID: 001091 Vehicle Description

The mid-1970’s was a terrible time for Porsche North America.   The company’s high line car – the 1974 -77 911 – was plagued with engine problems related to its emission control system and the “many metals” it was built with.   The company’s entry level car –the 914 – was wrongfully perceived by the market to be an underpowered VW.   And the company simply did not have a mid-market car.   Further. the company was one year away from the release of its new entry level car – the 924 – and another two years away from the release of its purported supercar – the 928.

In a percieved attempt to solve some of the company's mid-70's sales woes. some bright penny in Stuttgart came up with the idea of the 1976 Porsche 912E.   Thus. as Porsche was phasing out the 914 and was preparing to phase in its ill-fated successor the 924. Porsche released a one year only model - the 1976 912E.   This Porsche model did. and continues to. represent the perfect driver’s car - a car with the stunning good looks of a 1976 911 Carrera S Coupe (without its temperamental 2. 7 litre engine) and the incredibly reliable 2. 0 litre Type IV VW power plant (the same one Porsche put in the 914).   This engine was a fuel injected 4 cylinder capable of producing 86 hp.   The engine made up for its relatively low horsepower by having incredible durability and longevity. i. e. . these engines can routinely go 160. 00 miles without the need for a rebuild and some have been known to last over 250. 00 miles.

The 912E is often overshadowed by its earlier sibling – the 1965-69 Porsche 912.   However. in my opinion. the 912E is by far the superior car because: (1) it has a galvanized metal body that will not turn cancerous; (2) in stock form. it has a reliable 2. 0 litre with a famed long life (rather than the slightly modified 1. 6 litre VW Type 1 engine that was engineered for 1950’s era Porsche 356’s); (3) it contains a sophisticated Bosch L Jetronic Fuel Injection System (which adds both performance and fuel economy); and (4) it is simply more rare as Porsche only made 2077 912E’s (1677 coupes and 500 sunroof coupes).   The particular car presented here carries with it the distinction of being 1 of only 15 known Continental Orange 912E’s in the world (and is registered as such with the 912 Registry).   Thus. it is 1 of 15 of 1677 of 2077 (making it fairly rare from a collector standpoint).

I purchased this car sight unseen in December 2012 from a nice. old couple from rural Georgia.   At the time I purchased it. the couple assured me that the car was in perfect running order and that it would not need anything to be operated for many years to come.   After I received the car I learned (the hard way) that you should not trust nice. old couples from Georgia.   Thus. over the course of the past year or so. I have personally supervised the complete restoration of this car.   All parts were sourced from reputable sources. e. g. . Pelican. Ecklers. Zims. Sierra Madre. AutoMotion. In sum. you are looking at a 912E that has been virtually rebuilt from scratch.   There are receipts in the file that total over $15. 00. 00. not counting the car’s acquisition price.   The only portions of the car that I am currently unhappy with are the front and rear windshield gaskets and the door rubber.   I did not replace the windshield gaskets because I was scared of breaking the glass and because it is very. very difficult to reinstall the chrome trim rings.   I did not replace the door rubber because it is serviceable and is almost never seen.   Other than that you are looking at a the nicest 912E currently available and one that is in far. far above average condition (not concourse but close!).
