1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 Barker Landaulette GXM15 for sale
Current customer rating:
A lovely example of a well built and substantial. rare and sought-after landaulette. with opening rear roof. being an ideal configuration for wedding hire use. Within the last few years. approximately £50. 00 has been spent on the car. most of it with a well respected specialist. including a full engine overhaul. complete re-wire in correct cotton covered cable. brakes re-lined. new exhaust. rebuilt dynamo. attention to one-shot system. suspension. etc. rebuilt wheels and more besides.
A couple of years ago. the car was completely repainted in an attractive shade of ochre and black and at the same time fitted with wheel discs. which suit it well. A really nice example. with a fat history file. offered for less than the cost of the work alone!
Chassis No. GXM 15.
Reg No. VS 3298.
£45. 00.
Snippets – Rubber. Tea. Shipping & Steel Tycoons.
Robert Alexander Alston (first owner of GXM 15) was a member of the industrious Alston & Steel family who had commercial interests in Ceylon. India. Burma. Australia & of course Scotland.
These diverse business interests comprised of Glasgow & Greenock Shipping Co. (James Steel 1792/1858). Bank of Bengal. Engineering in Melbourne (William Heron Steel). Tea Plantations – Chundeecherra. Endogram. Looksan. Nedeem. Rangajaun. (Alston family). Kelantan Rubber Estates (Matthew Hill Alston died 1937).
The agent for the eastern concerns was Octavius Steel & Co which had been founded by Octavius Steel in 1876 and is still in existence today.
Robert Alexander Alston died in June 1962 leaving an estate of some £260. 00 of which he bequeathed £23. 00 to local & international charities – including Quarrier's Consumptive Sanatorium St Andrew's Colonial Homes in Kalimpong. India & Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society (Female Branch).
There is a record of a Miss Marion (Mary Ann) Cameron Carmichael of the same address of Marshill. Finnart St in Greenock who passed away leaving an estate in excess of £500. 00. 00 perhaps there is a family connection to be discovered.
