The W116 450 SEL was first revealed in 6. 9 litre form at the
Geneva Auto Salon in 1974 - a highly qualified successor to
Mercedes-Benz's original high-performance sedan. the 300SEL 6. 3.
Production of this 'flagship' model was and very limited and was
the first Mercedes-Benz ever to be fitted with a self-adjusting
hydro-pneumati. self-levelling suspension system with an
adjustable ride height switch in the dashboard. Additionally this
model featured the three-speed automatic transmission unique to the
6. 9 and a standard ZF limited slip differential both for enhanced
road holding performance in the dry and enhanced traction in
inclement weather. The cast iron 6. 9 Litre V8 engine was good for
140mph and would propel this Goliath from start to 60mph in just
7. 0 Seconds. Combining sumptuous refinement and renowned
engineering with such agility and speed this scarce model achieved
4th position in a poll conducted by Classic & Sports Car
magazine and printed in their April 1999 edition.
