I am pleased to offer one of the quintessential American Muscle Cars: A 1978 Pontiac Trans Am for sale! What makes this "quintessential" for me is this Firebird is complete with T-Tops and 6. 6L SHAKER Hood! This was likely a special order car as most Gold Trans Ams for sale have a tan interior. This car is offered in Gold over Black. Additionally this car features the deluxe chrome package which includes wide chrome on the tops of the doors. the tops of the fender corners and chrome all the way around the hood by the windshield. The chrome treatment. the fisher T-Tops and tri-colored Trans AM lettering and the six-color Firebird on the hood help to make this Gold metallic 1978 Trans Am look spectacular from any angle.
This is the same as the Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am. That movie helped to launch T-Top'ed Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams (and mustaches) into the psyche of every young child! I had wanted a Trans Am since I first saw that movie when I was just 6 years old. and it has sure been a pleasure to own. I'm confident this Firebird will provide the next owner with not only a ton of nostalgia but also many new fond memories.
The interior on this car looks to be nearly completely original. The dash is nice and not cracked. The headliner isn't torn but it is coming off the ceiling around the edges. The seats are not torn but they do show some wear. The odometer reads 18. 75 which is almost certainly 118k. I replaced the doorsills with new ones. and the surround for the shifter is also new (I can include the original one if desired. It just has a small crack in one corner). I also just replaced the weather stripping under the t-tops that also go along the side windows and it as a result the car really looks clean with the T-tops off. As an added bonus they should seal really well now too. There is a nice stereo with a tape deck in the dash (very '80s /'90s obviously) and of course rear parcel trey shows off two 6x9 speakers.
The wheels are the factory snowflake style. and the tires are nearly new. The rear tires were expensive but they're super nice. The car comes with an (unmounted) extra full-size tire in the trunk.
As you can see from the photos the paint is very nice overall. The exterior of the Trans Am has been repainted once and all the decals were new after the paint job.
This Trans Am has been in my own garage since I bought back in May. I've always wanted a "shaker hood" T/A. and man. this one was sure a fun find. It's been awesome to represent my business. Sunset Classics. on facebook with photos of this car ever since the night I bought it back in May of 2013. But I have about 24 cars at the moment and this one displaces about two of my VWs. So. if I'm going to stay in business I can't keep 'em all. But I try lol. Then I get humbled (and alerts from the bank and what have you) and I'm reminded I need to share in the pleasure of owning these awesome and inspiring classic cars.
So. back to the story. this car was already painted when I got it back in May. I was impressed immediately when I saw the car at how well the paint lays on the car. Metallic can be a tough spray but whoever did this car did a great job. The previous owner added that the car was painted when he got it too. So it's been a few years and while it's always been garage kept there are a few imperfections. The body work isn't perfect where the front plate goes. and if I was to keep the car I would probably get a "Smokey and the Bandit" front plate to cover the holes in the front ground effects. Other imperfections include one by the passenger-side T-top on the center bar. You will see all these imperfections in photographs by going through all the pictures in the Close Up Photo Gallery. linked below. But overall the car looks awesome. As a byproduct of my enthusiasm I shot over 800 pictures of this in the 6 months I've owned it. MAN! But I took out the duplicates and found just over 300 pictures that will help you get a very good understanding of the car. Just page through the two photo galleries below this description and you'll have a very good feel on what to expect when this car arrives in your driveway!
Here is my impression of this Trans Am after owning and enjoying it for the past 6 months. I work from home and I have a lot of cars to choose from. yet I was able to add 785 miles to the odometer since I bought it last may. This car has been a blast to drive. and everyone that views it stops in their tracks to have a look. It's a mostly original car. Except for a repaint. the tape deck and the few new items I added this car is basically original. (I added door sills. T-top weather stripping. shifter surround. arm rest. front hood chrome and door edge chrome). The 6. 6L 400 CI engine starts right up and the car runs great. The suspension feels largely untouched and the car can be a bit clunky going down the road. I just received side window weather stripping in the mail and that will come with the car. Once that is installed the door panels should tighten up and that will help the car feel and sounded better. Also the new T-top weather stripping I added should help quiet down the ride. I haven't driven the car since installing the weather stripping since they just put salt down on the roads. The automatic transmission shifts well and the car has plenty of power. The car will "mark it's spot" when parked (it drips what looks like perhaps a little tranny fluid). but I haven't had to top off fluids since I've owned it. It's been a great car for me and It's been a pleasure to own.
This looks to be a fairly highly optioned Trans Am. The car has A/C though it has not been converted to the new system and it is currently not hooded up. The car does have cruise control but there is a little clip that wasn't fastened when a new turn signal was added. and the previous owner was too lazy to repeat the wheel removal to replace the clip. But the little electronic clip is in the armrest counsel so if a person wanted cruise it wouldn't take much to get that working again. But I've enjoyed having full control of this awesome power under the hood.
