Although the American V-8 performance car was virtually extinct by 1975. Pontiac's F-Body Firebird actually enjoyed growing popularity. thanks to its powerful engines. outstanding handling. and bold styling. Strong street performance and countless racing victories solidified the growing legend. which reached a fever pitch by 1979 when the Firebird achieved all-time record sales. While the Firebird Trans Am stole the show in Burt Reynolds' classic Smokey and the Bandit. the stealthier Formula option offered the same powertrain choices but with a more mature Grand Touring character. Quite rare with the excellent WS-7 high-performance handling package. this example from 1979 is powered by Pontiac's “W-Code” 301 cubic inch V-8 with a four-barrel carburetor and equipped with a four-speed manual transmission plus power brakes and steering. THE INTERIOR IS BLACK WITH VERY DARK BLUE SEATS(LOOKS BLACK. VERY COMFY). the Formula was recently refinished in factory-correct "Code 75" Mayan Red complemented by a restored interior featuring new carpet underlay. new Black Deluxe carpeting. and a restored engine-turned aluminum dash inlay. All original gauges including the tachometer function as they should. and the factory-original Delco AM/FM cassette stereo system retains the original front and rear speakers. The radio and speakers are noted to work properly; The bucket seat cushions. interior door handle trim and door handles. the package tray. and headliner are new. All-new weather stripping inside and out including the hood and trunk. new outside door handles. all new locks and keys. including the ignition switch. were installed. The side glass is new. All lights function including the back-up lights. The trunk has been restored with new Light Grey and it contains the original G78 X 15 space-saver spare tire including inflation bottle. hook. and all associated hardware including the original jack assembly and original spare wheel and bottle labels. The engine is the original “W-Code” 301 Pontiac V-8. backed by the rare four-speed transmission and fully tuned. highly detailed. and running well. Recently. Larry's Engine and Marine in Tucson. Arizona rebuilt the original Rochester four-barrel carburetor. New V-belts are fitted. and the Firebird retains the original radiator. The original R-12 air-conditioning system remains with all original hoses and while reported to work. it was left uncharged. giving the buyer of the Firebird a choice to leave it original or convert to an updated R-134 system. The Firebird's complete brake system was replaced from the power booster to the rear including front rotors and pads. rear drums. wheel cylinders. brake shoes. and brake lines. The fuel system is new and includes the fuel pump. lines. fuel tank. and sending unit. The exhaust system is new from the catalytic converter to the tailpipes. Equipped with the special WS-7 handling package. the suspension is fitted with new HD Monroe shock absorbers. The original 15 x 8 “Snowflake” wheels were restored by Nu Wheel in Tucson and fitted with new center caps. lug nuts. and P235 X 70 R15 Cooper tires. A new windshield. new windows. the original rear window with defrost. and a new hood-release cable round out the package. Complete with PHS documentation and a specification sheet. this Formula is a great example from the Firebird's record-setting 1979 model year.
