While Mercedes-Benz has always been famous for outstanding build quality. it was the W126 S-class like this 1985 500 SEL that firmly positioned the company as the automotive world's finest purveyor of state-of-the-art technology. too. This impressive low-mile luxury sedan incorporates luxury features that we today take for granted but were truly ground-breaking thirty years ago.



The 500 SEL was Mercedes-Benz's flagship. a long-wheelbase sedan that incorporated more performance and technology than anything that had come before it. The sleek. aerodynamic look came to define and entire generation of German luxury cars and was an '80s icon for wealth and sophistication. As a result. finding an ultra-clean. low-mile example like this is quite a treat and you'll unquestionably find that this car still feels quite contemporary. The looks have aged well. and with that sleek icy blue paint. it looks appropriately subdued for its job. Finish quality is quite good. particularly given that this is an original car. and it fits together with the expected levels of precision. Bumpers are nicely integrated into the design rather than tacked on as with earlier models. and the subtle two-tone with gray lower body cladding helps to disguise the bumpers even further. The big chrome Mercedes grille is as traditional as ever. with the three-pointed star up top defying the wind that seems to have shaped the rest of the car.



The "L" in 500 SEL denotes a long wheelbase model. a personal limousine that added nearly five inches of rear legroom. Fully upholstered in high-quality gray leather. the interior will be familiar to any Mercedes fan and it's a testament to good design that it is so easy to get behind the wheel and feel instantly at ease. The seats. door panels. carpets. and other soft parts are in outstanding condition and seem to defy the decades. Some of the features that were standard on the S-class include automatic climate control. exterior temperature display. and the famous Mercedes-Benz power seat controls. which use a pictogram on the door panels to adjust the heated bucket seats. Even the rear seat is power adjustable and heated. appropriate to the passengers it was expected to carry. A Becker Grand Prix AM/FM/cassette stereo was state-of-the-art in 1985 and still sounds decent in the hushed sedan's interior.



The 5. 0-liter V8 engine was the top powerplant in 1985. making 228 horsepower and 229 pounds of torque with incomparable smoothness. The 4-speed automatic transmission starts in second gear unless you really boot it. but this car truly excels on the highway. where it loafs along at triple-digit speeds without apparent effort or sound. Given that this car has only travelled 36. 77 miles means that it is hardly broken-in. given Mercedes' products reputation for longevity. and thanks to careful maintenance it remains ready to enjoy. The A/C has been converted to R134a. which appears to be the lone modification. which tells you a lot about the quality and sophistication of the machinery. Underneath. it's impressive. showing off its low-mileage status and obvious signs of living in a warm climate. And those distinctive Mercedes-Benz alloy wheels were a staple of German luxury for two decades. with this big cruiser wearing 205/70/14 Sumimoto radials all around.

1. Per the eBay User Agreement. by placing a bid you are entering into a legally binding contract and are committed to purchasing the vehicle described above. The details of this commitment are further outlined in the eBay User Agreement.

2. Vehicle may be sold by Streetside Classic Cars prior to the end of the auction. Streetside Classic Cars reserves the right to end its auctions early or to cancel bids solely at its discretion and shall not be held liable for any such cancellation.

3. The winning bidder is required to contact Streetside Classic Cars within 24 hours after the close of the auction to finalize the details of the transaction.

4. A $1. 00 non-refundable deposit is required within 48 hours of the auction's close.   This deposit reserves the vehicle and removes it from the market. Acceptable payment types for deposit are: credit card. wire transfer. cashier's check. and money order.

5. If winning bidder does not contact Streetside Classic Cars and submit deposit within 48 hours of auction close. vehicle may be made available to the next highest bidder or another qualified buyer on a first come. first serve basis.

6. Streetside Classic Cars has represented this vehicle to the best of its ability. Prospective bidders are encouraged to contact us directly to provide additional information or answer any questions.

7. Please be aware that all pre-owned vehicles. regardless of age. mileage. or manufacturer are subject to cosmetic wear and mechanical failure. Streetside Classic Cars encourages bidder to have a personal inspection completed prior to delivery to help ensure your satisfaction. Third party inspections are to take place prior to a vehicles shipment or delivery.

8. All vehicles are sold "AS IS" and with no warranties expressed or implied.

9. Final or winning bid price does not include shipping. tax. title. or registration fees. It is the purchaser's responsibility to provide for any state or local taxes and shipping expenses resulting from the sale.

10. We can assist you in delivery through our network of private and commercial carriers. Most of them can deliver the vehicle to your driveway. We assume no responsibility for damages or delays incurred once a vehicle is in a shipper's custody.

11. Streetside Classic Cars bears no liability and shall be held harmless for any complications. expenses. or damages resulting from a failure to meet these terms as they have been set forth and established herein.

12. An additional documentation fee of $199 will be added to the purchase price at the time of sale.
