1971 Chevrolet Corvette

By the mid-1960s, Chevrolet had proved that their Corvette was plenty worthy of the title America's Sportscar. The Sting Ray was more than just a car that could go fast in a straight line but was also able to keep up on the track with the more high-tech and expensive European cars of the time. As the Sting Ray was entering its fourth model year in 1967, GM knew it was time to revamp the car again. What they debuted for 1968 became the longest running Corvette design in the model's history and ushered in many changes that have been seen in through the Corvette range ever since. The new design featured a long, low hoodline with the pontoon fenders flanking the driver's view out the windshield. The passenger compartment was pushed back to right over the rear wheels and most notably, the coupe version introduced the removable roof panel which is a staple of the Corvette coupe to this day. For this redesign, they also changed the previous “Sting Ray” name to a single word “Stingray” which has since been used in both the 7th and 8th generation cars. As the model grew older and governmental restrictions were put in place for crash safety and vehicle emissions, the design evolved- first with the addition of rubber bumpers in 1973 and then the introduction of less and less powerful V8s. Because of this, the Stingrays built between 1968 and 1972 are by far the most coveted of the third generation Corvettes and this car embodies all that is great about the model.

This 1971 example is a fantastically well kept driver quality example that is ready for you to take the tops off and just start putting on miles. Believed to have had just three owners from new, this Mille Miglia Red car has been well kept and lightly modified over the years to improve both performance and reliability. In 2019, the car underwent a restoration with the original, numbers matching engine and automatic transmission being rebuilt by D&W Auto Repair in Port Orchard, WA. While under their care, the engine was modified with the addition of an Edelbrock manifold and carburetor, jet coated headers, electronic ignition system and billet pulleys. These modifications give the car a modest bump in power but also helps it run smoother and requires less maintenance over time. At the same time, the water pump and radiator were both replaced by aluminum units to keep the car nice and cool for summer cruising. Since all of this work was completed, the car has only been driven 2,200 miles and is ready for its next owner to start putting on miles!

While the engine was under the care of D&W Automotive, the bodywork was being addressed by Custom Body. Although the car didn't need a lot of work, they made sure the body was straight and dent free before repainting it in the original shade of Mille Miglia Red which presents very nicely and would look at home in any collection. This car rides on a classic set of GM Rallye wheels wrapped in a set of BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires to complete the period correct look and give the car fantastic curb appeal. When you open the door, the interior looks just as good as the exterior- the black bucket seats and leather wrapped steering wheel are inviting and the power steering and AM/FM stereo make the car an exceptionally pleasant cruiser. This 1971 Corvette Stingray represents the quintessential early 3rd generation Corvette and with its recent reconditioning and upgrades, is ready to be enjoyed without hassle for years to come.
