Description

1977 MG MGB Roadster

The MGB is a two-door sports car manufactured and marketed from 1962 until 1980 by the British Motor Corporation (BMC), later the Austin-Morris division of British Leyland, as a four-cylinder, soft-top sports car. It was announced and its details first published on 19 September 1962. Replacing the MGA in 1962, production of the MGB and its variants continued until 1980.

A well maintained and upgraded car that has been well kept during the duration of the consignor's ownership. We give you a visually and mechanically very nice condition example of the B from 1977. Save for the large bumpers, (which was the Brit's way of getting around the 5 MPH law), and known as the phase 4 version, this car is a great little, nice running, and very reliable sports car.

Exterior
1977 was the height of the crash bumpers and this car sports them in front and back, all black and ready for impact. Steel panels are bathed in white paint, which is in good condition with a few chips, some minor touch up on the rocker panels, and a spattering of surface rust on the driver's rear quarter panel. Chrome trimmings are good and shiny, and the rubber seals all are supple. The top on this car is tight, and the rear windows are clear with no clouding as it should be since it is only 1 month old. A shout out to the British luggage rack for outings that require an overnight stay. MG rally style wheels, similar to Magnum 500's, are on all 4 corners and show up in 5 spoke form.

Interior
A swing of the doors and we have black vinyl for the door panels. This is showing a bit wrinkled and is peppered with black knobs and pulls and speakers. The buckets present in great condition with smooth black vinyl bolsters and woven black vinyl inserts, our consignor states that new diaphragms have been installed in the seats. The original dash is upfront and shows with no cracking or sunfade. A black 4 spoke steering wheel fronts the gauges which overall, though very clean and no rust on the bezels. A nice center console in black with a padded armrest, ashtray and the shift lever sits between the buckets. Black carpet covers the floors and is nice and clean. A peek into the unrestored trunk and we note a full-size spare with matching wheel along with some surface rust where paint has chipped off.

Drivetrain
Popping the bonnet and we see a surface rusted 1800cc 4 popper tucked into the patinaed and surfaced rusted engine bay. Some polishing of the air cleaner for the 2-barrel Weber carburetor which feeds its mix of air and fossils through a Pierce intake. A non-overdrive 4-speed manual transmission is bolted to the rear of the mil. Way back a 3.90 rear is on.

Undercarriage
Surface rust is noted on the usual components, suspension, exhaust and driveshaft but no invasive rust is seen. Independent coil springs and leaf springs make up the suspension and power front disc brakes and power rear drums are on. Our consignor states that the brake system was recently gone over, and the master cylinder, pads, shoes and braided lines were attended to. A rare Ansa exhaust system, including the header, replaces the factory parts and gives a great sports car tone.

Drive-Ability
I squeezed in and was off to the races in a flash after a quick start and short warmup. Here it performed nicely, handled well and was an overall comfortable drive.

She's just fine on the mechanical and suspension front, the interior looks great, and it runs nicely. With new seating parts, the brake system went over, a new convertible top, and a Weber carburetor set up, this car is a reliable and fun sports car to enjoy and carve some country roads with. Chip Chip Cheerio!
