1970 Dodge Challenger R/T

The Dodge Challenger is the name of three different generations of automobiles, (two of those being pony cars), produced by American automobile manufacturer Dodge. However, the first use of the Challenger name by Dodge was in 1959 for marketing a "value version" of the full-sized Coronet Silver Challenger. From model years 1970 to 1974, the first generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform in hardtop and convertible body styles sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda. The second generation, from model years 1978 to 1983, was a badge engineered Mitsubishi Galant Lambda, a coupe version of an economical compact car. The third and current generation is a pony car that was introduced in early 2008 originally as a rival to the evolved fifth generation Ford Mustang and the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro.

For consignment, a striking white 1970 Challenger R/T, and it has the big block 383 V8, 4-speed manual transmission, the R/T stripe, and the black out performance hood treatment. Muscle is ready for you!!!

ExteriorThe coke bottle design can be seen at its finest with this car with bulging fenders and a straight door in the center with a thin front end and pinched long oval grille with dual headlights. White paint, and R/T red decal stripe kit is on, and the top is showing with an ever-widening rear glass that drops gracefully on to the rear deck. On the hood is a wide satin black stripe over the white and highlighting a dual "whale nostril" hood opening. Nice chrome trimmings for the rocker and wheel wells and the window surrounds. Bumpers are nicely preserved and shiny, as is the deep inset black egg crate grille. R/T badges on the front grille, and rear deck, and within the red stripe in knockout form. A "pinched" rear houses the horizontal tail lighting that stretches across the rear and is framed in the bottom by a nice shiny thin bumper. On the rear a white roll pan with the vertical pushers form the bumper just intruding into this panel just a bit. Rally wheels with deep dish trim rings are wrapped in BFG raised white lettered radial T/A rubber. Noted some minor rust on the right rear wheel well, but otherwise clean and straight.

InteriorA swing of the doors and we've turned on the way back machine, Sherman, to 1970 where black molded vinyl and plastic form the panels for the doors. A wood centered appliqu panel complete with the "Fratzog" badge and shiny cranks and actuator paddles. The simplistic high back buckets and rear bench make up the seating, and these are red shiny vinyl bolsters with some red velour tuck and roll stitched cloth inserts. A wood rimmed original steering wheel fronts the dash and is original in its looks and condition. A grouping of round gauges is within the dash front and all floating in a field of wood appliqu. Noted with the R/T tachometer and rally instrumentation is optioned on. The original AM radio works, and a rare 3-speed wiper/washer option is on this car too. A rare sight indeed, a consoleless floor has an angled wood handled Hurst pistol grip shifter growing from an offset hump in the floor. Just above is an FM converter and a trio of aftermarket gauges mounted just below the dash. Clean fade free red carpeting and a tight smooth vinyl headliner complete this nicely preserved interior.

DrivetrainUnder the hood in the Hemi orange painted engine bay sits a numbers matching 383ci big block engine, with a Weiand intake and ribbed valve covers. A MOPAR air cleaner cover, sporting in black is atop and filters air for a 4-barrel carburetor. A 4-speed manual A833 18 spline, (consigner stated), is on back. An 8-3/4 rear axle is on the back and spins the rear tires. Headers and a dual turbo muffler allow this mill to exhale unimpeded. One of the mufflers has a hole in it.

UndercarriageAppearing restored with nice black undercoating covering all surfaces with no rust or even road dirt. All structurally sound under here. Drum brakes are all around, and for the suspension front torsion bars are on and on the back, leaf springs.

Drive-AbilityThis 383 big blocker fired right up, and ran smoothly. Wonderful acceleration and the manual transmission proved difficult sometimes to get it to go from first to second. Sometimes I had to go to third, and sometimes it slipped in but once warmed up all was good and shifting was nice. Handling was good, and a comfortable cruise can be had on the highway with this car. Also, the wipers were not working.

Very well preserved, and all nooks and crannies, corners and panels, and the interior present as excellent for this R/T original. Let's go for another "spin"!
