Plymouth : Other Station Wagon

1956 Plymouth Suburban CustomStation Wagon

History: This car is a true barn find from Alberta. From what I can piece together it looks like it has been parked in a barn for about 35- 40 years. It was purchased new at Russell Motors in Winnipeg Manitoba and there is no indication that it was ever handled by another dealer from new. Some of the paperwork I found would seem to show it as having remained with the original family until this year. I purchased the car from a friend who deals in classic cars and he was the one who pulled it from the Alberta farm.
Description: This car came from the factory grey and white with grey interior. V8. 3 speed manual with overdrive. It has a the original radio in fact almost the original everything. This Plymouth is amazingly complete and unmolested. it has not been modified in any way. the motor and transmission are original. It has not been rodent damaged or been moldy. It seems that its decades in storage were dry and clean. This car is very original condition. it has minor rust and dents but for its age I consider it to be an outstanding barn find car.
Reason for selling: I own a large collection of cars but lifestyle changes dictate selling off many of them.
Mechanical: When I got the car the engine was locked up. I pulled the plugs and soaked the cylinders and now the engine turns over. but it is still tight. I currently have it soaking more and I believe it will loose up. The clutch engages and disengages as it should. the brakes need to be gone over. the exhaust looks good and it steers well. I checked the electrical system and found the head lights. dash lights. dome light. turn signal. high beam and signal indicators and brake lights work well. there is a loose wire to the heated fan but when pressed together the fan works well on all speeds. the wiper are working. The engine is fully complete including the air breather vent pipe (an impossible part to find normally). there are no indications of any power-train changes or modifications. The windshield washer bag and manual floor pump pedal is in place and the battery hold down and tray are there. The overdrive system is in place but not tested. although the overall condition of the car would lead me to believe that it should work well.
Body: The body is very decent. there is some rust but the vast majority is surface in nature. the floors are outstanding for a car this age. I folded the rear seat forward and the floor paint is still shinny. I don't have a hoist but was able to take a picture of the bottom of the car. The bumpers have surface rust as does the grill but no rust thru. The paint is faded and old. it has a perfect patina. All of the glass is good including the windshield. all of the windows roll up and down. the cowl vent opens and closes and the tail gate opens and closes.
Interior: The interior is complete. there are no extra holes drilled in the dash. all handles and knobs are in place. The seats have a very old style of thick vinyl hand made covers over the original cloth. I have no idea if these were installed from new or not and I do not know what shape the original covers are in.  Plymouth station wagons were only available with rubber floor coverings. the coverings for this car are good with average wear. the cargo floor was a lino style material in grey. it has lifted but would be inexpensive and easy to restore. The headliner is  amazing. it is a plastic corrugated material called Royalite and is in great shape. All arm rests and door panel trim are there. the drivers door panel is warped but complete. The interior tail gate latches work well the rear seats folds as it should the rear windows works well but should be lubricated. The interior is dirty from a long time in storage.    
Notice: The wheels. tires and hubcaps are not included. it will come with roller wheels. There is a trailer hitch included.
Overall:  I love Rat Rods and Beach Cruisers. in my opinion this car is absolutely perfect for the part. The patina. the style and condition make it an inexpensive but very impressive candidate. Don't get me wrong. they look great restored. but as a Surfer Wagon there's no money to spend on paint and it is practically ready for the beach now. In any venue or show and shine this car would be unique and command a great deal of attention.
If your looking for a project car that won't cost more than your house to complete but will be an actual investment than this may be the car for you. I'm offering it unreserved because I'm serious about selling it. I have too many and so some have to go.  Both the trim tag and VIN tag are in place. This car will be sold on a bill of sale.
  Location: The car is located just outside of Salmon Arm. British Columbia. about 3 hours from the US border. If you are a buyer from outside of Canada I will help with importation as I am familiar with US procedures for importation. There is no duty on this vehicle if it is imported to the US. I can in many cases help arrange a shipper. but this is time consuming so I will only try to get a quote for the winning bidder.  
Payment: Cash in person or bank to bank wire transfer is acceptable. Payment must be received within 7 days of the close of the auction NO EXCEPTIONS. I can store the car at no charge for several months if needed.
