This is a great example of a very rare and desirable investment grade classic car. Its an original Hemi orange with black and orange interior 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner.
This car was recently discovered hidden away in a barn in west texas. The owner had passed away and the widow did not know what to do with it so it sat. Astonishingly the man that had died owned the car since at least 1974! Not a one owner but dang close to it. He was a career Navy man and drove the car all the way up to just before he passed away. The original engine was swapped out at some point with a '71 G code 440 and it was tired so the engine was completely rebuilt in July of this year. I have the receipt for all the work. New pistons, rings, bearings, ect and complete head job. The transmission is the original born with 727 torque flight with vin stamp and is also completely rebuilt with new torque converter. Both engine and trans have only break in miles on them. There is also a new power steering pump and the original power steering gear box was rebuilt as well. All new hoses and belts. The engine compartment and underside of hood was stripped and repainted when the engine was out.
What makes this car so desirable is of course the two tone interior but its also a pretty highly optioned car for a Roadrunner. Power steering, power disc brakes, am/fm radio (still in car) AC, bucket seats, Slapstik shifter with console, remote hood release, remote deck lid release, dual racing mirrors, hood tie down pins, dual exhaust with Bazooka tips and blackout treatment on rear bumper, front and rear spoilers, black vinyl top and performance hood treatment all on the fender tag.
Once I got the car home I pulled out the old, ratty carpet and was amazed at how clean the floor pans were unfortunately that was not the case for the trunk floor. It had practically turned to dust due to leaks from rust holes at the rear window and the previous owners desire to put shag carpet in the floor of the trunk. I replaced the entire trunk floor and both drop offs with AMD metal, seam sealed it just like the factory did and sprayed it in 2 coats of PPG epoxy primer and 2 coats of single stage DCC paint. Both rear qtrs were patched with metal and the patchwork blended in with the same DCC paint as trunk. The lower channel of the rear window was replaced with a deck filler panel from AMD and several holes on sides and top of rear window channel were also patched with metal. The rear glass is NOT installed as it would have to be removed again for the vinyl top install.
The vinyl top was still partially on the roof but I removed it and sanded down the roof and sprayed it in 2 coats of black epoxy primer just to protect it temporarily.
The only rust left to deal with on this car is a small amount around the sides of the front windshield on the A pillars. Its hard to tell exactly what the extent of the damage is until the windshield is removed and I don't want to take it out as I am enjoying driving it but it does not appear be too bad.
The body on this car is in great shape now that the trunk is repaired and all 4 frame rails are solid. It was an undercoated car from factory so the entire underside is solid.
The car appears to be in its original paint with the exception of the drivers fender and the paint work I did at qtrs.
I can provide a quote to paint the car if you wish but will need to have a discussion with buyer so I know what expectations are. Quality paint jobs are not cheap.
There is a small quarter size hole in hood where previous owner had a Dixco hood tach mounted. I removed it as I think it sticks out like a sore thumb. I have the tach and it will go with the car but it does not work. I also have the original radiator but it probably needs recoring.
The carb, brake booster and master cylinder and are new and the car had an old set of leaky headers on it that I changed out with the correct hipo exhaust manifolds and these manifolds have been treated with a high heat 2000 degree coating by Polydyn. Just the coating was $300 but it will last for a lifetime. I have a set on my 68 GTX that are 10 years old and still look like new. It is the ONLY exhaust manifolds coating that will last and I have tried them all.
Interior has the original seats, console, dash, ect. but will all need redone.
I also found a very nice build sheet in the car as well.
It was overcast the day I shot these pics so the car looks red but it is not. It is bright Hemi orange.
Cars like this dont come up very often anymore. Don't let this be the car you wish you had bought when you had the chance.
