1968 Rover P5B 3500 V8 Coupe, MOT & Tax exempt for sale
Current customer rating:
1968 (G reg) Rover P 5 B 3.5 V 8 Coupe An early car. MOT & Tax exempt. Silver birch with Mulberry leather interior and a dark burgundy roof. The car looks
fantastic and is described as "very solid and sound".
Although the paintwork is old, it does look lovely and shines exactly as the photos show.
It starts first time, every time after 2 pumps of the throttle,
runs nicely and drives very well. She's happy to cruise effortlessly at motorway speeds or equally waft around listening to the clock ticking behind the hum of the V 8!
The Mulberry leather interior is all complete and has
a lovely original, authentic feel . It's not brand new but that adds to the charm! (for example,
some of the stitching has come lose on the front seats, some of the furflex edging is tatty etc - but this could be seen to very easily). Being 53 years old, it obviously shows some signs of age. It is not a £25 k example and so there is certainly room for some financially-viable cosmetic improvement, if that's where you wanted to go with it. Personally I have got more enjoyment out of using it "as it is" and whilst I have other classic cars I'm terrified to use, I always reach for the Rover keys!!! It's great to drive and turns many heads of all ages.
Some recent work: During last November, I installed a brand new shaft-driven distributor, an electronic ignition system (with module) and a high power coil.
At the same time, I replaced the plugs and leads, a new distributor cap and fitted a reconditioned [original] alternator.
All 4 x tyres were replaced with brand new ones during May and have done less than 300 miles. The original 1980's Kenlowe fan started to blow the fuse so I had a modern twin fan system fitted (keeping the old one, in case the reason it was changed is questioned). All of the exhaust manifold gaskets have been replaced with new ones.
I have further (recent) bills for £1800 where I had work done to the rear chassis legs by a local welding garage (removal of rust/new metal) and so the underneath is in excellent shape.
It has proof of expensive rust proofing treatment which was paid for by the previous owner.
Please see a v ideo which was taken this week:
As mentioned, the paintwork is obviously older. It looks good but there is some cracking around the tops of the rear wings, for example. The bottoms of the door skins have some rust (nothing terminal) and t he drivers side front wing has a little rust localised to the very bottom edge (it's not rotten though). The previous elderly owner decided to brush paint inside the door shuts (many years ago) and s ome of the rubbers have perished.
There's a split in the leather of the rear seat back and also a dent in the rear bumper.
- T here's a fine balance of being honest and making a nice car sound dreadful and so look at the pictures and video since they will be a much better steer of what it's actually like to look at!
These form part of the description
(t he bonnet fits fine - it's just not closed properly in some of the pictures! )
I t's also worth mentioning that it looks lovely and was even the cover vehicle on the Rover club magazine, August 2021 !!! (see the pictures)
- It's not a show car, but rather
a nice looking, honest, usable example - and with some viable ongoing investment, it could be made perfect if wished. History: The car comes with a huge history file dating back to the early 1970's and also has a lot of period main dealer invoices! It's not had many owners (4 previous owners in its 53 years and 10 months of age!).
It's also HPi clear (not that it really matters, but perhaps worth mentioning!).
There's a log of a documented speedo change during 2014
(This was logged on MOT history by the garage doing the work in order to prove authenticity, and so the actual mileage the car itself has travelled can be worked out to the mile - around
130,000 miles approximately).
During the 1980's it had a full bare metal restoration by an Austin / Rover main dealer.
It had a lot of money spent and I have the
documentation
to show what was done that
includes colour photos of the work, detailed invoices breaking down all of the repairs and a list of new parts (and all at a considerable cost!).
I am very sad to see my P 5 B up for sale and I know I will miss it, but I've transitioned in to another vehicle which will be taking up most of my time for the foreseeable future. That's the only reason she's going.
It' s a very genuine car. Viewing is welcome and advised.
