Although originally a 4 litre, this car was at some point in its life fitted with an earlier 3 litre engine originally fitted in a 1935 Bentley. An attractive car in good all round condition, with excellent, relatively recent, deep reddish brown leather interior, new carpets and headlining, all well executed and smart. The frontal aspect is very impressive, with P100 headlights, Ace 'Cornercroft' sidelights, a Marchal centre spot, and a pair of Lucas 'Alto' horns, and the full set of Ace wheel discs add to the car's handsome appearance. The box file of history with the car includes invoices, MoT certificates, tax discs, a green logbook from the 1960s, a complete ownership record and an original 3 litre handbook. Running and driving nicely, lively in performance, with a good feel on the road. Offered serviced and prepared, fitted with new tyres and newly MoT tested. Nice registration number too!

Chassis No. B169JY Reg. No. MG 5515

Snippets: Stockbrokers and Theatre

B169JY was owned by Gaston de Castro for almost 20 years until the mid 1950s. De Castro was a stockbroker with an early interest in motoring (and speed), in 1907 he was charged with "covering the distance of 176yards in 12 secs (30 miles an hour)! His business interests included being a director and chairman of the yacht brokerage firm of Gadjah Poetih Co Ltd, co-directors included Pierre Vermeersch, Harold Holt & Robert Hallet with the company secretary being Raoul Pontus. During the 1950s B169JY was with Councillor P. Davies of Staines and Frederick W. Fox an accountant who had worked in Bulawayo, Rhodesia prior to returning to England. During the '60s and '70s the car was with John Chartres Mather a screenwriter/producer turned Theatrical Agent who in 1965 took over the British office of the established American agency of William Morris. John Mather's involvement with the theatre can be traced back to when, aged just 19, in 1941 whilst with the Kinross Home Guard he arranged a Grand Dance & Cabaret and later with ENSA. In 1951 Mather persuaded Bela Lugosi to star in the British touring stage production of Dracula and twenty years later he produced "The Avengers" at The Prince of Wales Theatre starring Simon Oates and Kate O'Mara. The next long term owner was R. M. Ecroyd a dairy farm in the district of Hereford who in 1959 took over the old rectory of Brinsop and moved there with his wife and 8 month old son. Mr Ecroyd already had two other farms with an acreage of some 277 acres for his cattle.

Classic CarsOver 30 years in businessCars are physically at our premisesLovely roads to test drive onOur reputation

About usThe Real Car Company was established in 1987 by Ray Arnold & Ian Johnstone. It was a hobby that 'Got out of hand'. Our interest in cars of the type that we now sell goes back to our childhoods, and ownership back to the 1970's. Gradually more cars started passing through our hands, and by 1986 we had decided to make a full time occupation of buying and selling the cars that we love.

We started with a single car (all we could afford) which we sold quickly, and before we knew it we had 4 or 5 on our hands! This was alongside another business that we were involved in at the time. In the Spring of 1988 we gave up the other business, (exhaust systems), rented part of the premises that we still operate from now, and went full time.

We had a good start in the boom years of the late eighties, which set us up well enough for us to ride the storm of recession in the years that followed. As the years went on the number of cars going through our hands increased gradually, we built up a workforce, and now in 2009 we carry a stock of around 40 to 50 vehicles and there are ten of us here. In 1999 we were awarded 'International Classic Car Dealer of the Year' by Classic Cars Magazine. The market for 'our' kind of cars is nicely stable, generally prices are creeping upwards all the time, and we feel that investing in a car - or cars - of the type that we sell is generally a great place to put your money. Don't do it just for investment, but you can get a great deal of pleasure from these vehicles, prices are - in our opinion - unlikely to drop, and you can't drive a share certificate! Some prices in the last three or four years have moved up considerably, and these cases have shown a tremendous return on investment.

Over the last fifteen years or so we have brought home several hundred cars from the USA, and we are always looking for more. If you know of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley anywhere in the world, in absolutely any condition, please let us know. Distance no object, commissions happily paid. We always particularly enjoy the 'barn finds'.
