Up for auction is my 1962 Plymouth Belvedere 413 Super Stock “Max Wedge” tribute car…. This is not an original born 413 Wedge.

 

This Belvedere is an original v8 black car as evidenced by the VIN number. It is a solid body car with original body panels and floor and trunk pans.

 

The paint is approximately 15 or so years old and it does show some ageing in the form of some small cracks and a couple small chips. However. the paint is still very presentable and it is slick with a mirror finish. The chrome. trim. and bright work are in good condition and only have minimal patina. The glass overall is in good condition with the exception of some small etching on the glass on the driver’s side windows.

The wheels are original steel wheels & hubcaps and the radial tires are in excellent condition.

 

The interior looks basically showroom brand new. It has new leather like upholstery and door panels. new carpet and headliner. and new seat belts and package tray. The interior is very nice and comfortable and the car smells good on the inside (nonsmoker. non-pet)  It is a radio delete and heater delete which is exactly like “Max” came from the factory. It has the Stewart Warner oil pressure gauge in the dash and it looks like a period correct gauge and it works. The windows roll up & down fine. The items that do not work are the horn. speedometer. and fuel gauge. The temperature gauge. oil pressure. interior light. turn signals. all do work as well as the wipers. The Emergency Brake works very well. The interior is nice. It has a Dealer Remove Warning label on the windshield… equipped with maximum performance engine from Chrysler.

 

The engine runs strong and seems to be very dependable. The block is a 440 (drivers side pad J 440 HP) and the heads are factory 413 Max Wedge heads number 2402286. It has the factory dual 4-barrell cross ram intake and the factory exotic looking exhaust manifolds which were state of the art design. The exhaust manifold/headers dump into a factory look alike exhaust system with square cut outs for the drag strip. Just the way the “Max” came in 1962. The original “Max” came with a 3-speed on the floor transmission but this one is equipped with a 4-speed and a good thing with the 4. 10 rear end gear. Another interesting thing is that the leaf springs on the right side are 8 in number while the springs on the left are 6 in number. I believe that this is how the “Max” came from the factory to handle the torque on the right side pulling wheel.  

 

“Max Wedge” Facts

 

…Pure race. yet anyone could order one from the local Plymouth dealer. Horsepower was purposely under-stated to be 415/470 ft. lbs. of torque. 460/490was a little more accurate.

 

… Most “Max” cars came with a delete everything package. It was barely street legal. yet “stock enough” for NASCAR & NHRA car class rules. No radio. No heater. and NO WARRANTY.

 

…A full steel body “Max” 62 Plymouth achieved the impossible in 1962. It was believed then no stock car would ever be able to break 12 seconds. Tom Grove in the first Melrose Missile ran an 11. 93 and 118. 57mph on July 15th. 1962 at the Summer Nationals. Right off the trailer…First time out.

 

. Part of the “Max Wedge” appeal is that they were the fastest cars of their day. but. by most accounts. they didn’t look the part. Some people found them downright ugly. their outward appearance was plain-Jane. no stripes. no flashy chrome. trim. colors. or badges. There was no tip off to distinguish a “Max Wedge” form Grandma’s slant 6 grocery getter.

 

Summary:

This is a very cool car and it is the Hit at any and all car shows. Most people have never seen one and there is no way to really tell this one from an original one. The number that I was told on production in 1962 was 47 and the price now would be in the six figure range for an original 62 Belvedere “Max”. That fact makes this car very attractive and the fact that you can actually drive and enjoy this car without worry of damage to a real one at that kkind of money. The reserve is very reasonable and I don’t know where you would find another one. so don’t miss out. I don’t believe that this car will last long. Good cars sell quickly!
