1970 CITROEN MEHARI for sale
Current customer rating: (548 votes ) based onHi
I am selling my restored 1970 Citroen MEHARI.
I purchased this car as a project while on vacation in Florida in December 2010. during that same winter I started restoring the care but completely stripping it to the bare chassis. it was repaired and the chassis and metal subframe that support the abs plastic body were treated with 3 coats of POR 15. The gas tank was cleaned and relined. This model is a 4 seater. the rear seats folds into the floor so you may carry some ( light) bulky cargo.
A lot of parts had to be ordered as well as a new body since the original plastic became brittle over time. it was not UV resistant. this car's body was shot! So an order was place with MCDA ( Mehari Cote D'Azur) they are located in the south of France. Their invoice was over 3000 Euros ( about $4000) and inluded all brand new 19 pieces of bodywork. I ordered the thicker version. new top. sides. all new harware. the front and rear bumpers. wheel covers. All receipts will be included with the sale.
Other parts were ordered from FPS out west to redo all brakes. wheel bearings. 1/2 shafts dust boots.
So once all the parts arrived. it was time to play with all the lego pieces and put the car back together. since this car was a US model. the front headlights were round. only about 200 cars made it here so they do not reproduce in France the front fascia. nbsp; I had transformed the car into a Euro model and had the proper headlights and support shipped with all the parts.
Everything works except the windshield wipers. and to be honest I did not have the patience to lay under the dash to try to reach the motor. it is not a car I would drive in a downpour. and a small rain is easily taken care of with RainX.
Electrical were redonne also. The engine was running well and starts well. so only plugs. wires. fuel lines and filter were replaced. I had the carb rebuilt. It does leak a small amount of trans fluid when parked for a long time ( is it a leak or is it just marking it's territory in the garage?) I think it is from the front seal. nbsp; All the hadrware was replaced with Stainless steel bolts except for some of the 7mm I could not find in Stainless. The tires are Firestone. they have plenty of thread left It was a fun project and was a blast to drive last summer. I am now working on an Ami 6 and do not drive it very much. so here is your chance to get one right here. right now and you can take it to the Citroen "rendez vous" in Saratoga spring NY where this year they are celebrating the 45 years of the Mehari.

Last january the car was a hit with other Micro cars such as a couple peels. isetta. at the Detroit North American International Auto Show. Was nice to see the reaction of people with all the micro cars. despite it's micro engine 602 cc. the car will do 55 on the expressway and about 40 mpg. Funny enough I had to drive it almost 1/2 way to the show with the temp in the 20's. my tow vehicle blow a coolant hose and I had to be there at a certain time to be able to get the car in. so leave the tow car on I 75. hop in a Mehari. put your had and gloves on and have all the onlookers think you are a "nut case" :)
I will include with the sale all the receipts. the extra parts I have. It does not show in the pictures. but I had also ordered the rear window ( made of plastic like the sides). These cars being very popular. parts are easy to get. everything powertrain related can be found here since it shares all these parts with the 2cv. the rest is one e-mail away from MCDA or the Mehari Club Cassis. both located a few miles from each other in the south of France.
Please look at the following photo album that covers the restoration. they are about 50 pictures.
The car is sold at auction so please do not contact me for the reserve. bid what the car is worth to you. I am available for inspections and would help but will not be responsible for shipping. Contact me thru e-bay if you have any questions. Buying one of similar quality in France will cost you anywhere from 9 to 12K euros ( $11700 to $ 15500). then you can import it yourself for about $2k to $3500 depending on whether it comes in a container or not and that would include the fees and if you are lucky to find a "Shister importer" then you might pay over $5K to import it. M y reserve is below those numbers.
Thank you for looking
Happy motoring
Francois
