After an exhaustive search. this numbers-matching survivor was rescued from the Nevada desert in neglected but amazingly original condition.   It was complete and unmolested. right down to the original factory hose clamps. Although the actual mileage cannot be verified. given the condition of the vehicle at the time it was found. it is considered to be very low. The truck was completely disassembled and underwent a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration that was completed in September of 2013 by a master mechanic and restorer with over 25 years of experience.

The entire powertrain was completely rebuilt reusing the restored original components such as the alternator. carburetor and starter.   The engine was bored . 040” over and received a new cam. lifters. pistons. timing components. bearings. gaskets and seals.   The transmission. transfer case and axles were meticulously rebuilt. receiving new bearings and seals throughout.   All of the vehicle's components were reassembled with the original replated bolts and hardware. Increasingly rare genuine Toyota replacement parts were used throughout the restoration and great care was taken to preserve or recreate the factory paint marks and part labels.

The same care and attention was given to the underside of the vehicle.   The frame. axle housings. nbsp; all of the chassis and steering components as well as the bumpers and wheels were powder coated for durability. All of the original brake and fuel hard lines were replated and reused.

The body retains it all of its original sheet metal and floors.   It was completely stripped to bare metal. epoxy primed and finished on a rotisserie using high quality PPG Deltron paint in the rare original Toyota “Fashion Green” color.   All of the rubber components were replaced during reassembly and with the exception of the wing and corner windows. all new tempered glass was installed.

What really sets this vehicle apart is the exceptional attention to detail. Almost all of the original hardware. such as the bolts. nuts. hose clamps. hard lines and brackets were individually hand stripped. re-plated and reused. All of the factory decals were all preserved and reused or reproduced. The original wire harness was completely restored using new brass terminals and new. exact-duplicate plastic connectors.   The interior upholstery was faithfully reproduced. and even the characteristic spot weld “dimples” were carefully preserved on the exterior of the body.

The few modifications represent popular dealer add-ons of the day.   These include a fully restored. period-correct Warn winch. Selectro locking front hubs. and a custom fabricated roll bar.  With the exception of the brand new BFG 33x10. 50 KM2 Mud-Terrain tires and three-point passive resraint seat belts. this vehicle would be at home as represented on a Toyota dealership showroom floor in 1970.

Highly prized by collectors. this late-build 1970 model of the FJ40 represents one of the last years of the classic era of the Land Cruiser. Mid 1970 saw the advent of power assisted. dual circuit brakes and an improved bench seat.   Upped to 155 hp. . the power plant was the highest evolution of the F engine before being replaced by the emission control laden 2F engine in later years. The classic round tail lamps. column shift transmission with dash mounted transfer case shift all gave way to bulky. rectangular tail lamps and turn signals. floor mounted transmission and transfer case shifters and bucket seats over the course of the next few years.  The Land Cruiser's worldwide reputation for ruggedness and utility has made it very popular for use both as a workhorse and as a recreational four wheeler. This has taken its toll on the availability of restorable examples as many have been heavily modified or just plain worked to death over the years.   The dwindling supply of survivors and replacement parts virtually guarantees the appreciation of the value of this increasingly rare. iconic vehicle.
