1959 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE

Mercedes-Benz was evolving quickly in the late Fifties and was well on its way to becoming the foremost manufacturer of luxury and near-luxury automobiles in the world. Much of its success can be traced to the 220. Introduced in 1954 with a 2. 2 litre single overhead camshaft inline six. Mercedes-Benz engineers quickly improved. notably with the introduction of the 220S in 1956 with dual Solex carburetors and 100 horsepower. Mercedes kept refining the 220S and finding additional horsepower within the 2195cc displacement. reaching 130hp with the model's ultimate version. the 1959 220SE with Bosch mechanical fuel injection. This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet presents interesting possibilities. A 4-speed car with radio and heater. it is straight and solid with only a few small areas of rust under the body. Its restoration was begun a while ago and has progressed through a repaint in white and reupholstery in red leather. Much of the chrome has been redone although a few pieces. including one bumper. are missing. The interior wood has been refinished but. again. some pieces are missing including the door caps. The top is old vinyl and should be replaced. The engine is complete and turns over but it has not been run recently and neither it nor the engine compartment have been done. There are some issues with the repaint as well although it is adequate for touring and will be even better with some attention. All in all. it is a restoration that is reasonably undertaken on a sound and straight basis. The missing parts are reasonably available. With some mechanical attention and a new top it could be on the road before the end of the summer. leaving the cosmetic details to next winter. On the other hand. it is an ideal candidate to be the basis of a complete. straightforward. restoration.
