1962 Pontiac Laurentian – Mint condition original 44k miles from new. SURVIVOR CAR
Up for auction is my 1962 Pontiac Laurentian. Original genuine 44k miles from new.
HISTORY OF THE CAR
Bought new on 31/10/1962 at Motors Pty Ltd (Holden Dealers) in Brisbane. The car was bought by Mr John CHRISTIANSEN and garaged in Paten Street. Milton (Brisbane) right next to the XXXX Brewery. The car lived a pampered life and was passed to Mrs Betty CHRISTIANSEN upon the death of her husband. It escaped the 1974 floods having been moved to higher ground. Betty drove and loved the Pontiac covering it in sheets inside the garage. Betty sold the car to her mechanic in 1986 and it was moved to a farm outside of Warwick Qld where it was stored for 30 years. I discovered the car inside a shed. The car has been continually registered for 55 years and still wears the original 1962 numbers. Comes with the original service warrant book. instruction book and sales brochure. Genuine survivor car – 3 owners. This is one of 608 Pontiac Laurentians assembled by GMH in 1962. This is number 250. It's one of a handful that survive in similar condition. It is the only one known to have been painted in Pittwater Green. I have seen a few 62/63 GMH assembled Chevs in this colour but never a Pontiac. Assembled in Sydney. sold in Brisbane and has never left the state of Qld since new.
BODY AND PAINT
The car still wears the original GMH Pittwater Green and Atherton Ivory roof paint. The car is 100% factory original down to the factory chalk markings on the chassis. The Pontiac has never been painted. never had rust but has had the front sunshade removed. Screws for the sunshade are still in the roof and I can't bring myself to have the holes filled and repainted. Sunshade comes with the car and does have minor rust at the leading edge. I have been asked a few times as to who painted the car – it's that good.
The interior is 100% factory original leather. The hood lining. dash. instruments. glovebox. boot mat are all 100% original and in fantastic condition. The original clock has recently stopped working. The boot still has the original Olympic Air Ride spare tyre with factory nipples still evident on the tread. The Pontiac still has the original Diamond Dot Air Chief radio fitted and works perfectly once warmed up for 30 seconds or so. The carpet has been replaced at some stage but it has the original carpet still on the lower doors. It has the original Warm Ride heater demister fitted.
MOTOR AND GEARBOX
The car runs the original 283 Chev motor but has PONTIAC on the rocker covers. The motor runs smooth and quiet. Uses no oil. Still runs the original Powerglide auto. The powerglide does drop a small amount of fluid if left to sit for over a month – this is a common powerglide issue. Used once a week it drops no fluid. The car still runs the original exhaust manifolds into a single system. Thne car is quiet and runs perfectly. It's so quiet. It does run the original Delco generator. Never passes a quarter into the temperature gauge – even on a 38 degree Qld day for 200 miles.
The Pontiac still runs the original brake shoes but has had everything else rebuilt. Rebuilt stainless steel sleeved master cylinder. new wheel cylinders. new brake lines and runs the original power booster. This car is amazing to brake. It pulls up straight and hard.
The suspension has been fully rebuilt. New bushes. lower and upper ball joints. idler arms. trailing arm bushes. new shock absorbers and power steering ram rebuilt. This car sits true and straight at 65 mph. It still has that ‘Yank Tank' roll when turning a corner – something that brings back good memories for me. New white line tyres all around. The Pontiac is so original the upper and lower ball joints when replaced were found to be the original riveted in factory fitted.
RECENT WORK PERFORMED
After driving the car for a while I decided to completely go through the car and replace the following:
· Upper Control arm bushes
· Lower ball joints
· Upper ball joints
· Rear trailing arm bushes
· Front and rear shocks
· Rebuilt power steering ram
· Rear sway arm bushes
· Full service including oil and filter (twice within 200 miles). sump plug. spark plugs. points and condenser. ignition leads. rebuilt 2bbl Rochester carb. replaced oil pressure switch.
· New brake lines. new brake wheel cylinders. rebuilt master cylinder.
· New tyres – Hankook white lines – 195/15/75.
· New Reproduction accelerator pedal.
· Original automatic choke serviced and now working perfectly.
The car is garaged half way between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It's currently on Historic Registration in Qld and will be sold with the safety certificate and rego if sold to a Qld buyer. The car will go unregistered and uninsured if sold interstate but the 1962 number plates will go with the car to keep it original as possible. I am not in a hurry to sell. I have my eye on another classic car and only have room for one classic car otherwise I would keep the Pontiac. Thanks for looking at my auction. It has a reasonable reserve. Good luck. The photos attached don't do this car justice.
