This beautiful unique drophead Alvis SP20 SC was bodied by Brainsby Woolard thro' John Charles and Co. in 1934.   She is the only known Alvis to be fitted with this body.   She was extensively restored in the late 70's by Alvis specialist Ray Sargeant. who set the speedo to zero. the car then spent some years in storage being recommisioned by Red Triangle in 2002.   When she came into my ownership in 2003 she had covered only 300 miles in the previous 15 years and was not running very well .

The major problem was identified as a badly worn and profiled camshaft.   The engine was rebuilt by a firm in Plymouth who found that the main bearings were also very tight.   The bearing were refetled. new bearing made up for the camshaft and a new camshaft from Red Triangle fitted together with new followers. The engine then ran beautifully. the car being toured extensively both in the UK and on the continent including over several alpine passes.   Three years ago the cylinder head. which had been repaired. began to leak badly.   When removed the head was found to be so severly cracked that it was almost beyond repair.   Luckily I found a chap that had had a small batch of these heads cast using the orginal patterns.   While I waited for the new head to be machined I decided to have the car repainted since the 40 year old paintwork was begining to look a little tired. The car was entrusted to a local restorer who carried out a bare metal respray to a superb standard.   The new head with its new valves and guides was fitted. the magneto professionally rebuilt and two new rear springs fitted.

The car now running beautifully. it was ready for its third family wedding. just in time for my son's wedding 2 years ago.   She also won the best in show at the National Trust's show at Castle Drogo in 2011.   Unfortunately she has been little used since as my worsening arthritis has made her difficult for me to drive.

Were I keeping the car. there are a couple of things I would have done. these being : new carpets. rear quarter bumpers re plated and a small amount of mouse damage to the hood lining repaired.   She is a beautiful fast car. running superbly.

Please come and see her. She is magnificent and her amazingly clean and totally rot free under side can be seen on my hoist. Another Speed 20 SC with a Lancefield drop head coupe body sold at H & H Auctions in February for £105000 inc. premium.
