History

In Benz speak there is no more revered model than the ‘SL'. Loosely translated ‘SL' means ‘lightweight sports' and it has been attached to the mightiest Mercedes sports cars since 1954 when the legendary 300SL was shown to the world for the first time.

The 300SL. specifically the great ‘Gullwing' coupe. re-established Mercedes' sports car credentials after World War 2 by winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1954. and began the company's triumphant march through to domination of world motor racing in the 1950s.

Since the 300SL there have been a series of high performance SL sports cars. and most are now popular classics.

Among them is the 450SLC. a coupe version of the 1970s 450SL. which is both affordable and practical while at the same time possessing all of the things that make a Mercedes special.

Models

The SLC was a coupe version of the SL roadster. It was essentially the same except for the wheelbase. which was extended by 360 mm to accommodate the two rear seats. and the fixed steel roof with the slightly higher roofline that gave those in rear seat quite reasonable headroom.

They were the essential differences. In all other respects the SLC was the same as the SL roadster.

Power was delivered by a smooth and powerful fuel-injected 4. 5-litre single overhead camshaft V8. which boasted peak power of 147 kW and top torque of 345 Nm.

There was just one transmission on offer. a three-speed floorshift auto. It wasn't as sporty as a manual gearbox would be. but the sporty 'Benz was set-up for the German autobahns where it could comfortably extend its very long legs.

The longer wheelbase of the coupe gave it a more comfortable ride than its shorter wheelbase soft-top cousin.

Servicing

This car has been well serviced throughout its life  including a fully stamped service history up until 123000.  Last month the car was serviced by a specialist which included replacing the all the engine hoses ensuring the tick over is absolutely spot on.  A power steering pipe was replaced at the same time and all fluids replaced.  The MOT expires in March 2014 and I have included 6 months tax. In July 2012 she had a full service including replacement spark plugs. HT leads. distributor cap and rotor arm.  In February 2012 she had a replacement fuel pump and rear brake pads and discs.  The car runs exactly how she should and sounds exactly how a V8 4. 5cc engine should.
InteriorThe electrics are all in good order and there are no wiring issues. The interior is good for the age. however. she is not perfect and there are signs of minor wear.  The carpets are in good order and the dashboard is excellent (not cracked like many).  One of the more expensive areas to replace is the headlining and a common fault in many examples.  The headlining is in excellent condition with no tears or fault. The instrument panels are all working except the clock and the fuel indicator sometimes sticks at the quarter tank mark (I just simply refill at that point - requires a replacement tank sender unit i suspect).  All of the interior glass is in good order.  The  front windscreen has a tiny chip which I will try and fix before the auction finishes in any case it is not a crack and only require auto-glass to fill it if i do not manage to do so.
Exterior
The exterior is in good condition she has had a blue same colour respray last year and at distance look stunning.  As a perfectionist I think close up you can see the occasional overspray i. e small traces in the engine bay and air vents.  There is no significant rust a few spots as would be expected for the age.  but certainly nothing major or overtly visible. That said she looks as she does in the pictures very pretty.  The tyres are in excellent condition as is the spare which i replaced last week.  Her chrome work is excellent for a 33 year old car and really does polish up well.  The door locking system is sometimes temperamental as she is vacuum sealed and not thankfully electrical.  I keep her garaged so it does not bother me to fix will require a simple vacuum reseal.  The engine bay is in excellent condition and there are no issues with anything mechanically. The alloys are in excellent and original condition. I have included a new set of number plates so they have a polished new look.
Paperwork
The car is registered with the Mercedes Benz Club and has an agreed value of £5500 for insurance purposes.  The car is currently insured through Lancaster Classic Car Insurance of which I pay £106 per annum for a central London postcode. so excellent value.  The original service book. manual. maintenance book. and the dealership book is included.  Also I have as part of her history the original sales brochure from 1980. Haynes maintenance  manual. a collection of last years servicing sheets and her current MOT and V5.
Sales Guidance - 7 Day Auction
The car is 33 years old and not perfect. she runs very well and sounds fantastic and is ideal for the summer months that hopefully will arrive soon. I would if purchasing have the locking system repaired. the dashboard bulb replaced and the clock repaired. The car would suit a garaged home.  Mechanically she is absolutely sound and with 11months MOT and taxed the prospective buyer can purchase with confidence. No tyre kickers and no scammers.  No sales abroad - UK only. Feedback of more than 10 please.  You are welcome to view the car.  Sensible offers only please - will be considered.  Collection must be by no later than Thursday 25th April 2013 as I am due to travel abroad after that date.  Collection will be from central London so easier for potential buyers to travel to a mainline line London Station.  £200 Paypal deposit to be made immediately after successful bid. remainder -  cash on collection.  Remember this is an auction on successfully bidding you are expected to pay for the car so please only legitimate and honest purchasers only.  Any questions please ask. Happy bidding.

On 16-Apr-13 at 10:05:46 BST. seller added the following information:

Unlike other Merc models of this period this vehicle has a double cam chain which was far more reliable than those single cam chains used on on the 380 for example. There are no subframe issues and the auto-box selects all gears with no undue hesitation. knocks or bangs. On my last run to Oxford I achieved 25mpg.
