1966 Fiat 500F 'oval dial' just restored in excellent condition for sale
Current customer rating: (272 votes ) based onOverview
The car is a 1966 'oval dial' Fiat 500F (base model spec) in white with a red/white interior. Everything is original including the 499cc engine. The car went through a 100hr restoration in June and July this year. including a full respray. nd has covered less than 200 miles since. It is immaculate and mechanically extremely reliable.
The car has been used extensively for filming since I bought it in summer 2015 - including the BBC1 Antiques Road Trip programme. I am only selling it because filming has finished and I have decided not to add it to my classic car hire fleet (i run Great Escape Cars).
Although there are other Fiat 500s for sale. this is an opportunity to benefit from my investment in the car. which exceeds its value. I have only been able to do this because the car has had a commercial income.
History
The Fiat was imported to the UK in early 2015 and I bought it from the first owner. There is regrettably no history from its time in Italy except copies of some of the Italian registration documents. I was told the car had been a one owner vehicle in Milan - the low mileage suggests this is likely. The car had apparently been restored in Italy recently. although the quality of the restoration was presentable but poor in detail. It was a '2 metres' car.
The car was specifically bought for filming and potentially for use on hire. I also have a soft spot for them and it is one of the cars I have always wanted to own. It has only travelled 1800 kms between the most recent MOTs - it had regular use for filming and some hires. sufficient to prove it was reliable. At the end of filming we took the car off the road and restored it during June and July in our own classic car workshop. The original plan was to rectify the poor Italian restoration and put the car back on hire. However. plans change and i feel that the car is now too good and. due to its small size. too fragile for hire. I am really sad to be selling it.
About the car
I bought this model because it is the original 'oval dial' version rather than the later strip speedo version. It has a four speed non-synchromesh gearbox. is LHD and has the original 499cc engine with just over 44. 00 miles. believed genuine. The bodywork is excellent due to the restoration. the gearbox and engine are very good and the interior is also new and very good.
The previous owner had fitted a new interior (red with white seat tops). new chrome and new white wall tyres. It is an extremely pretty little car.
Good Points
Although the Fiat is 50 years old this year. it is in genuinely excellent condition. There is not a mark on it. The bodywork was taken back to metal and resprayed so is rot-free.
100hr restoration and respray within the last 2 monthsExcellent gearbox and engine with no faults. excess smoke etcEvidence of new suspension partsCar is completely solid underneath - no MOT advisoriesNew interior in correct colour schemeNew chrome. including bumper over-ridersNew tyresLong MOTExtensive recent history - fully documented work through our workshop (the car has wanted for nothing)Interesting TV provenanceProven reliable - this is not a car that has sat in a garage for monthsLow mileageBad Points
The car really wants for nothing. The only negatives are a slight tear on the driver's seat and discolouration on the whitewalls of the tyres caused by the tyre black we use. We will paint the white bands before sale. The knee bump bar on the lower dashboard is missing - I haven't got round to replacing it but they are easily and cheaply available on Ebay.
Summary
This is a genuine and honest example of the classic Fiat 500F. Due to regular use it is reliable. with all potential issues 'shaken out. ' It has received a restoration that far exceeds its value. I am sad to see it go but it is impossible to keep a car we're not using and space is at a premium (even though it's small). I have nothing to hide - please feel free to ask any questions or arrange a viewing.
