I've owned this car for 16 years and it's come a long way in that time. It started life as a 3000 GXL that I bought while working for Practical Classics magazine. I drove it for a year or so but the 3-litre Essex was tired. so I looked into rebuilding it. Around the same time I read about Basil Green's South African Peranas – Capris with Mustang engines.

One thing lead to another and I built a 302ci Ford V8 from a Mexican block (stronger bearings and better quality casting). The block was bored. new pistons. crank reground etc. Over the years this has been further developed and it now has Edelbrock RPM Performer alloy heads with 2. 02in inlet valves and roller rockers.

The Holley four-barrel carb is long gone and in its place sits a Weber IDA manifold with four Jenvey downdraught throttle bodies. The electronic fuel injection is managed by an Emerald ECU. which also controls the ignition.

The gearbox is a Borg Warner T5 as used in Mustangs. although I used the Sierra Cosworth version because it's close ratio.

A custom prop takes the 300bhp to the Atlas axle which has a Ford Motorsport plate type limited slip differential and rear disc brakes. The axle is sprung by 2. 8i single-leaf springs and a Caprisport location kit keeps everything in place.

At the front the car has a Capri 2. 8i front crossmember with power steering rack. The geometry was adjusted to suit the car by Northampton Motorsport. Mondeo discs and calipers are squeezed inside the genuine RS alloy four-spokes. Bilstein dampers sit at each corner and the car has a full set of Yokohama tyres.

The car was the subject of an extensive body refurb and respray which was detailed in Practical Performance Car magazine. Nonetheless. it retains its original panels and strut tops. The front wings have had discretely flared steel arches welded in to clear the RS alloys and rear arches were reshaped slightly for the same reason.

The car was built to drive and has been to the Nürburgring and South of France on several occasions. But I haven't used it for three years so I'm reluctantly letting it go. It's been thoroughly recommissioned and I've fitted new front seat covers and a full carpet set. It comes with a fresh MoT with no advisories.

This is no show queen so if you're after a concours car it's not for you. But it is probably the best V8 Capri in the country if you want a car you can actually drive. Any questions. please email will@ppcmag. co. uk
