1936 Auburn 653 Phaeton. South Australia delivered NEW in Torrensville SA to the owner of a bus company. This car has spent its whole life in SA and has always been garage kept. It is a stunning car to look at and to drive is a delight. it features the original fully reconditioned 6 cylinder Lycoming alloy head motor. (Lycoming are manufacturers of aircraft engines). it features a 3 speed close mesh gearbox with a Colombia two speed rear axle . so effectively 6 forward gears and two reverse!! The interior has new soft two tone leather trim. the top is new salt and pepper original material. the carpet is all new and the brakes. front and rear suspension has all been overhauled. the wiring loom has been replaced with correct period correct antique harness. the starter motor and distributor and generator have been overhauled. the motor has been fully reconditioned and has all new cylinder liners and standard new pistons. the crank was machined and all bearings replaced. hardened valve seats were installed with new hardened valves fitted for unleaded fuel. the exhaust system is all new. some chrome has been redone. the paint was done 35 years ago and is very good. The windscreen is new. the car has never had any rust and has been cherished by its very limited number of owners. I have owned this car for over 20 years and it took a long time to convince the original owner to sell to me. In the time I have owned this vehicle I have done all the above improvements to the car and it has only been driven minimal miles since . The car has the two most rare accessories which are a electric clock and a Radio. radios in the 30 s cost as much as a car! These cars were purchased by the very wealthy and in the USA it was mainly Film stars and notoriety's who owned Auburn's Cord's and Duesenberg's. There style and comfort not to mention there speed was what made them so popular. This car is a rare well built work of art. Auburn were also famous for the boat tail model with the chrome pipes coming out of the bonnet and featured a eight cylinder supercharged Lycoming motor.
There have been many replicas made of the Boat tail speedster.
This particular car featured in the 70's in the James Flood series of beautifully illustrated books of significant cars in Australia.
This car won Two awards in 1949 with the Sporting car club in SA and again in 1950 for a class award the car still has the placqes on the dash. The instruments are quite comprehensive featuring. oil. amp. fuel. temp . gauges and also a tachometer. The car features a very unique device called startix. This original equipment device still works and restarts the car if you stall it . (without the driver having to do a thing. ) this was aimed at the lady driver to make it an easier process to restart the car without the need for puling levers and pressing buttons. this car is ready to go any where with reliability. I will be sad to see it go. but life changes. I chalenge you to find another that is for sale that is better than this most owners will not sell them.
