1968 Jaguar 420 Saloon for sale
Current customer rating: (215 votes ) based onThe Jaguar S-Type was a major redevelopment of the Jaguar Mk
II. It used a mid-scale version of the Mk. X independent rear
suspension to replace the Mk. II's live rear axle and featured
longer rear bodywork among other styling and interior changes. The
S-Type was available with either 3. 4 or 3. 8-litre XK engines but
only in twin carburettor form because the triple carburettor setup
would not fit into what was essentially still the Mk. II engine
bay. By the time of the S-Type's release in 1963. the Mk. II
remained an unexpectedly strong seller despite its age. Although
the Mk. X was selling less well than hoped. especially in its
intended market of the USA. Sir William decided to retain all three
models in the Jaguar range concurrently. The Mk. X was renamed
'420G' in 1966 and was joined by another new model. the 4. 2-litre
420. The 420 was developed to replace the S-Type but because some
demand remained for the S-Type. all four saloon models (Mk. II. br/>S-Type. 420 and 420G) remained on sale until the arrival of the
Jaguar XJ6 in 1968.
This 1968 Jaguar 420 Saloon was in the same family from new
until it was recently purchased by the vendor direct from the
family estate where it had been in storage since 1981. The mileage
of 76. 00 miles is believed to be correct for this matching numbers
car. The current owner has completed extensive re-commissioning
which has included a bare metal repaint. new rubbers all-round. br/>refurbishing the interior woodwork. new headlining. carrying out a
full service and rebuilding the carburettors. This 420 is finished
in Old English White with its original blue leather interior and
the original factory chrome wire wheels and comes supplied with a
V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate which expires
in October 2016. This is a very rare opportunity to purchase one of
the rarest production Jaguars of the 1960's.
