Rover saw Buick's compact 3. 5 L V8 from the Buick Special as a way to differentiate the P6 from its chief rival. the Triumph 2000. They purchased the rights to the innovative aluminium engine. and. once improved for production by Rover's own engineers. it became an instant hit. The Rover V8 engine. as it became known. outlived its original host. the P5B. by more than thirty years.

The 3500 was introduced in April 1968. and it was necessary to modify the under-bonnet space in order to squeeze the V8 engine into the P6 engine bay: the front suspension cross-member had to be relocated forward. while a more visible change was an extra air intake beneath the front bumper to accommodate the larger radiator. There was no longer space under the bonnet for the car's battery. which in the 3500 retreated to a position on the right side of the boot.

In 1971 Rover announced the addition of a four-speed manual 3500S model. fitted with a modified version of the gearbox used in the 2000/2200. The letter "S" did not denote "Sport". it was chosen because it stood for something specific on those cars: "Synchromesh". However it is important to note that the 3500S was noticeably quicker than the automatic version of this car with the 0-60 time coming in at 9s as opposed to 10. 1 for the standard car.

The vendor states that this is an UK original manual 'S' and is not an auto conversion. Videos of the Rover starting and driving can be found on the links below http://youtu. be/HbIjKWyKDyE http://youtu. be/P6i_P2LGZoE

It has been extensively restored. the previous owner owned the car since 1996 and there is full documented history over the past 19 years to include all MOT's and Invoices. The Rover has an MOT until Feb 2016 and is tax exempt registered with the DVLA. The Mileage is currently 7. 00. from the previous MOT's this is 107. 00 and this is believed to be correct. The most recent service was carried out in Oct 2014 and included a new clutch at a cost of over £800. The car has been extensively restored. it has been stripped back to the inner monocoque with all areas of rust replaced. with photo's to substantiate this. The car has had the following: New Clutch. Reconditioned radiator fitted. new points and distributor. both carbs rebuilt. new strter barrel and ignition switch. new electric fuel pump and modification of fuel system. reconditioned starter motor. new front hub bearings new gearbox mounting. new gear linkage. reconditioned gearbox fitted. replacement exhaust. power steering and fan belts replaced. new oil sender unit. reconditioned alternator. plus many other parts. too much to individual list but there are clear invoices for all parts and work carried out for past 19 years. All chromework is excellent and even retains the badge bar. The car starts first time and drives superbly. Engine works fine. along with all the gears and brakes. Does not overheat even after standing in traffic. Interior is the original Rover/BL Vinyl and also comes with a boot full of spares.
