1938 Rolls-Royce Wraith Saloon WXA5 for sale
Current customer rating:
A historically significant car. having started life as a factory ‘trials car'. chassis No. 26 G VI. being re-numbered WXA 5 when sold in 1938. A very worthwhile project. in sound condition. with good structure. but unused for many years. Comes with the original engine (No. WIII No. 7). together with a spare one. both dismantled. Written up in Ian Rimmer's book on the ‘Experimental Cars'. adding to the already interesting history of the car. Very attractively priced.
Chassis No. WXA 5 (but see description above).
Reg No. RC 4724.
£12. 00.
Snippets: Paten Hotels
Each of the 6 experimental Wraiths had individual colour schemes namely Black. Light Grey. Maroon/Black. Chocolate. Dark Red/Fawn & Maroon.
In 1924 Rolls-Royce established a testing base at Chateauroux. France where the experimental cars could be put through the required 10. 00 mile tests -without too much interference from the French authorities! From here 26-G-VI the car covered some 15. 00 miles throughout Europe.
The first private owner of WXA 5 is noted as being Arthur John Paten who in 1898 followed his mother's footsteps & established a Wine Merchant business.
By 1916 A. J. Paten had expanded his business & the firm of Paten & Co. became hoteliers with the purchase of the Swan Hotel in Bedford.
After Arthur's death in 1950 his eldest son Harry took control of the firm and continued to expand the business until 1967 when he handed the reins of the Paten empire to his son-in-law Michael Padley.
At one time the firm's portfolio included not only public houses. off licences. Beer-Bottling premises but hotels such as The Grosvenor Hotel. Stratford The Langstone Hotel. Portsmouth. The Marks Tey Hotel in Colchester & The Swan. Bedford.
